My lad is going tomorrow and sitting in his old season ticket seat. My Dad is going tomorrow and sitting in his old season ticket seat. Neither know the other is going...
Just a heads up, for those that don’t know. The M271 Southbound, past the Lordshill exit, is only 2 lanes, until sometime next year, owing to work on Redbridge roundabout. Tailbacks normally start by the Lordshill roundabout, but can go back quite a bit some days, especially if like today a lorry breaks down in one of the two lanes. Might not be a worry for the friendly, but could be difficult on a “proper” match day. Millbrook Road is moving well most days, since they ended the Millbrook roundabout works.
It’s a pigging nightmare most days ...... can’t imagine what it must have been like with a lorry breakdown! I’ll continue down from the airport - even though they’ve fecked up the M27 completely now it’s becoming a “smart” (dumb) motorway .....
Any suggestions for a better route in from the West - coming from Dorset I usually use that road, but wouldn't mind an alternative. Come through Totton maybe?
No, don't come through Totton. That's like climbing out of the frying pan and falling into the fire. As someone else suggested, carry on to the airport turn-off, going right, and under the motorway. Then bear to the left side and get onto Thomas Lewis Way until one turn before Bevois Valley is reached, then turn left and quick right into Empress Rd, going towards and then left into Mount Pleasant Rd and the railway crossing. You can park there and walk the rest of the way or carry on past the railway crossing, getting closer to the stadium all the time. If they'd just open that old Halt up behind the stadium I'd say travel by train, even though it's more expensive. But they haven't so I won't.
Wish they would TSS. When they opened St Mary’s, I thought “it’s just a matter of time”. Sadly, not to be .....
My eldest bro is a heritage railway enthusiast, and he told me that if there is any barrier to that happening it would come from Network Rail.
The only way I could see it open is part for a wider development of the ground/area and/or the away fans moving.
The (narrow) tunnel is already a bottleneck so unlikely to ever happen without disrupting the wider network.
What? A few times every other weekend? I can't see it being a big thing. They already run boat trains down that track. The big no-no is the infrastructure upgrade. Even if Saints paid for all of it and the upkeep they'd drag their feet.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to put a halt where the sheds are in Radcliffe Road? The line from Southampton Central joins the line coming down from St. Denys there, so people from the west (me!) would benefit as well. It’s only a 5 minute walk from St. Mary’s too.
