On the off chance that we're in for both Lo Celso and Fernandes, that obviously means something's changed - because there's no way we'd have both in the team without someone making way, and I don't think it'll be Lucas somehow...

Opening bids are always rejected. If you get one accepted, then you've paid too much.

...or you're Bayern Munich buying from anyone else in Germany.

I was laughing at the commentary yesterday when they were talking about Bayern having to restructure.
Too many high fees and wages, due to clubs not just handing over their players every year, apparently.
Still nicked Arp on the cheap and paid €80m for a left-back, though.

Levy’s opening bids are always rejected, true.

Be interested to know what the bid was. They reportedly want €70 mill.

    Wasn't it quoted as €45m?

Lewandowski getting a standing ovation for moving to Dortmund's closest rivals on a free transfer remains one of the most bizarre sights I have ever seen in football. It's the equivalent of Spurs fans rising in unison to applaud Harry Kane as he leaves the pitch for the last time before joining Chelsea for nowt. Madness.

Spurs knew the price before the meeting, what gets achieved by offering €25 million less? All that will do is piss off Sporting

    (belated response below)
I am, grateful as I am for what he's done. My question is whether a player can help us win a late stage CL tie. Here are some of my answers:

    No doubt:

    Moura
    Dele
    Son
    Winks
    Jan
    Toby
    Rose
    Lloris
    Sissoko
    Ndombele

Seems to hold up his end:
    Lamela
    Would you believe GNK?

Not so far/didn't look like it
    Kane
    Dier
    Davies

I'm sure if I looked at the games again, I'd revise my opinion a bit, and add some names to the categories. My point is that I want Spurs to win a big trophy, the PL's out of reach, it seems, and the CL isn't. The key in the CL is not only talent, but the ability of a group to cohere. We edged Man City and Ajax because the 11 players on the field believed intensely and played as a team (in addition to having talent and a bit of luck). I don't think the 4-2-3-1 with Kane will cut it at that level. Kane shoulders too much of the burden, and takes up too many of the attacking options. Moura Dele Son on the other hand--and maybe Moura Kane Son--can be as effective as Sane Firminho Salah...I think.

In any case, the question is whether a signing can help us beat the best teams in a knockout tie or single game. I wasn't sold on anyone besides Ndombele before the window and I'm still not, but lo Celso looks like the best available Eriksen replacement and we'll need one this year or next, in all probability. What I'd really like is a left back who can step in for Rose when and if he's hurt this year (or in case he leaves). I'm not so worried about RB because Sissoko can be genuinely good there.

I'm up in the air about Fernandes. I think he'll probably upset the balance on the team. On the other hand, all out attack got us through the Ajax tie, and he seems to be an all-out attacking kind of player.

Dani Alves has joined São Paulo. Thought he’ll have stayed in Europe tbh.

Bild report that we're preparing a bid for A German Team centre back Matthias Ginter

There's one small reason I'm not 100% convinced: we seem to be linked with him every other summer

Sporting knew what we would bid before the meeting. What gets achieved by them asking for more? Surely that will just piss off Spurs.
    Negotiations always start like that.

It could be that there's no intention to do a deal on either side right now. Sporting are probably hoping to bring forward a big bid from United and we're trying to get Betis to lower Lo Celso's price. A possible deal between us might press those issues? Personally, I doubt it but I see how it could...

If neither log jam moves, things may change but right now, I don't see him as a top priority for us whilst Eriksen and Lo Celso issues remain open.

On the Eriksen front, Marcelo Bechler (who is pretty well respected on such matters) is tweeting that Ajax have accepted an offer from Real Madrid for Donny VdB.

If true, that's a killer for any move to Madrid for CE.

I assume that RM will comply with their usual standards of financial fair play with all this spending (plus the astronomical salaries to players who don't even play).
