In East Lancashire, some parts of Yorkshire, and some other northern parts of England, a teacake is a round bread roll which is cut in half to make sandwiches. They do not usually contain any sort of dried fruit. They can be made with either white, brown, wholemeal or granary flour. A favourite way to eat them is to slice them into fingers, toast and then spread with butter and Bovril or Marmite. They are also used to make bacon sandwiches, known as bacon butties.

From a southerners point of view, I would expect a tea cake to be :-

    i) toasted
    ii) have sultanas in it
iii) have margarine or butter in it

a teacake is white and slightly flat,
a currant teacake has currants in it.

southerners seem to know bugger all about teacakes<laugh>
    other words used down south,bap,cob,roll.
