I suspect that he's not happy about our current transfer business, but he keeps talking about it because he keeps getting asked. I share his concern and I think that there are obvious holes in our squad at the moment. I don't think that he's saying anything new, though.
It's the point of the summer window where I have to double check to see if I'm not supporting Arsenal by mistake...
First what you are seeing is an increasingly confident Pochettino. His personal position has become stronger in each of the seasons he has spent with us. Couple this with his growing command of English. I suggest that he has always been reluctant to speak in English because he is an extremely intelligent man who has a habit of speaking in a complex and subtle manner. This causes him to be aware that his command of English does not allow for his usual use of language. As his English has grown so has his commentary to journalists. A number of posters like to double guess and interpret what he says. I tend to take his words at face value because to do anything else is MY specualtion not Pochettino's. It is not news that the board control the buying of players they have always done that , including during Redknapp's time. Harry said much the same as Pochettino as have other managers at Spurs. The managers is asked who he wants or if he wants X player but the negotiations are with the board. As you would expect actually, this is a multi million corporation after all. Many on here, just like the media are trying to second guess and speculate who we are going to transfer in or out. That this can become annoying to someone like Pochettino is hardly a surprise. It's not that we don't care CK it is just the fact that we can't do anything about it and are here to enjoy the football. I have enough issues and decisions in my real life to satisfy such needs without looking to football to provide them. Football for me is entertainment and escape from everyday concerns. My only concern with the business side of football is WHO is playing for Spurs and there it ends. Who costs what and who earns what is of little interest and gets in the way of my enjoyment of the game. If I go to a concert I am there to listen to the music not to discuss how much the artists cost, football is no different.
I’m certainly no Levy apologist, and i really don’t like the fact that in general we leave transfers so late. That was my one wish for this summer - bring in the players early for preseason to give us the best possible start to the season. However that’s in an ideal world, and it’s not to be. But at the same time, I don’t see how we’re weaker, like some fans suggest? So far, we’ve managed to keep Toby and Eriksen. We’ve still got rose (who I don’t think can be replaced with the same level of quality at a sensible price right now) We’ve god rid of a fair amount of dead wood. We’ve somehow managed to get £20m+ for Trippier who is utter garbage, and any of our remaining options will do a better job! We’ve broken our transfer record to sign Ndombelé, the one position where we were absolutely desperate for a replacement. Yes it would’ve been nice to see some more quality through the door sooner, but to say we’re weaker is simply not true. However, things do hang in the balance, IMO. My view on this will change if we lose any combination of Toby, Eriksen and Rose with such little time remaining.
Edit: wrong thread for that post so copying it over. As far as transfers go I really don’t know what to expect from now to the close of the window. I wouldn’t want to lose Rose for Sessegnon at this stage, maybe GKN? Lamela if he can stay fit will definitely add something to the team throughout the season but as ever with him, it’s a big IF. Will anybody take Vic off is? I can’t realistically see any more outgoings now unless someone comes in at the last minute for Eriksen with mega bucks but surely that would have happened by now. I could see us getting Sessegnon and maybe Lo Celso, but I think the later will need outgoings for the cost and the composition of the squad.
It could be that Daniel Levy is trying to sign Gareth Bale (on a 'hip removal deal') and our Coach/Manager doesn't want him. That would be VERY Levy and likely to drive MP nuts, when we're supposed to be attempting to complete Lo Celso/Sessegnon/whoever. It could be a million things. I don't like it and I think that it makes us look weaker. However, if we bring in Lo Celso and keep Rose, Toby and Christian Eriksen, we could have a great season. Am I nervous? **** yes...but isn't that half the fun?
We've sold Trippier, let Vorm and Llorente leave and only signed Ndombele. I'd say that we've marginally strengthened, but it's debatable. The contract situation with a number of our players is also a major concern. There's a week or so left in the window and we need to move players on and bring a couple in, at least. I'm not particularly confident of either happening, right now.
however its quite possible that he is actually pissed of with Levy. Its like a cry for help but the majority of Spurs fans wont have a finger pointed at Levy. Wether signings are made or not from here on in...the point remains...this strategy of taking it to the last day messes up our preperation. Usually this results in a slow start to our league campaign and the usual 'lots of games left yet', mantra will be splattered all over here. We cant compete financially so we need to be savvy in other ways to try to gain advantage...im not surprised one bit hes losing the plot a little...challenging at the top with such uncertainty cannot be easy for anyone. Or maybe as everyone claims 'hes just wumming the Press'
Is it so different than any other team right now? Still lots to happen across the league with more comings and goings.
Every player is also a year older and more experienced than they were at the start of last season and most have had a proper rest. Given the age of our squad I would say that at least two thirds of them should be substantially better than last season. Skipp looks better and better every time he plays.
Why does it matter what other teams are doing when our goals are clear for us to chase? You realise it was very different last summer when we signed no one and others were making improvements...yet last summer it was...the stadium...or Poch has money but isnt spending unless he gets who he wants to this season where Poch is clearly stating his frustration at signings and his lack of control over who comes and goes. So much deflection
Skipp looks like he can replace Wanyama, who unfortunately appears to be finished at the top level. Tanganga has also looked impressive in pre-season and has probably earned himself a shot at some squad selections, at least. That still leaves us with a right-back issue, no natural back-up for Kane and some midfield problems. N'Koudou and Wanyama need to be moved on, at least, while there are questions over a number of other players in the squad. We need to look to the future and do something now or we could be replacing most of our defence next season.
I feel there must still be movement to come in this window, one or two players around Europe are waiting to go and once one transfer happens the rest will. Whether the merry go round includes Spurs of course remains to be seen.
I can't agree on this.He may only be 17 but Troy Parrott is the best natural back-up for Kane that we could contemplate. The kids got the lot and needs to be backed as such. He's very young and has little experience but he's our future striker and ready to play some part next season. We'd need to spend a fortune to get an equivalent talent, who would be wondering how they get on the pitch instead of HK, Sonny and Lucas. Troy Parrott will be learning and happy to do it and securing his and our future. If we don't, he'll be signing for Dortmund. We're not buying a striker.
There's been rumours this summer that the club might strike a deal with him to cancel the remaining part of his contract because, realistically, he cannot offer the prospect of making it on the pitch enough to retain him. I'd much rather resign Llorente than continue with Big Vic at this time. He may have significant limitations but he can get on the pitch. It's a dreadful shame but it's the reality of the situation.
From what little I’ve seen of him I agree - between Parrott, Son, Lucas and Dele we have a number of options (Kane-lite, faster, more mobile forwards playing centrally, or a Thomas Muller-esque false 9) up top and Parrott definitely seems a hell of a prospect. It would have been nice to keep Llorente as a proper target man to complement these, as he was so effective at times last season, but I guess you can’t have it all.
