I think Rocky is the most heard race engineer on the F1 grid and he also pairs well with Vettel. His comments on radio seem to be as entertaining and unique as Vettel's, specially the one heard in Spa race edit when Vettel retook the lead from Rosberg "Good man, that's what I am talking about". Only Rob Smedley comes close but he is shown more on the race edits than heard, probably due to language.
Rocky and Smedley seem more human than most race engineers, I think that's important and Vettel and Massa seem to have a closer working relationship as a result. Ciaron Pilbeam sounds quite scary at times.
According to Lee McKenzie a lot of engineers swear in their messages so FOM don't broadcast a team's tactics. I think it was Button this season who was trying to pass someone in the pits, and the message was broadcast and the other team were able to cover it.
Really? I always thought he seemed like a nice bloke and fairly underrated as an engineer. I think Jenson's engineer's (don't remember his name) voice always sounds different whenever he starts to say " Okay Jenson -"
Might be getting confused with someone else, but wasn't it Pilbeam giving Webber a message and then Brundle goes "that message sounded like it was given in the dark"
Nah that was Button's engineer in China when Webber was gaining on him in the last two laps. He said "Okay Jenson (), Webber is close behind you, he is going to attack you, he is on fresher tyres. Beware of Webber!" Then DC said "The only way that message could have sounded scarier would be if it was delivered in the dark."
That's the one. Yeah not Pilbeam then, whoever Button's engineer was that race, seems to change quite a bit.
I remember Rocky telling Vettel what he wanted to hear in Silverstone when he said "Alonso pitted early and is hard on his tyres" when in fact he pitted on the same lap as Vettel and was easy on his tyres. A lot of teams try to prevent other teams finding out their strategy by using coded messages ("We'll stick to Plan A") or swearing. Stella and Alonso speak in Italian.
I prefer Rob as a race engineer he seems very passionate about racing, though i cant imagine what he did in Brazil 2008, smashed the whole garage post race.
I don't find Vettel's radio transmissions entertaining in the least in fact they make me cringe almost as much as that finger thing. please, please please and a thousand more pleases stop doing the finger thing and then a can start to like you a bit more.
he didn't, but someone else did
That's a bad idea. Liuzzi and Trulli will crack that code easy and they'll kick his ass! For all the good it would have done Trulli at Renault...
haha i forgot about that one, cant blame him, though McLaren would've felt the same in 07 when Ferrari gave Kimi the lead from Massa.
