One of my favourite artists. Laurie Anderson, with Gravity's Angel, from Mister heartbreak. Yes, that is indeed Peter Gabriel backing her: Please don't mention Oh Superman.
Her late, great other half was one of my favourite artists, this particular song is probably even more relevant now than when he recorded it 30 years ago...
Here's one you may not expect from me. Dusty Springfield singing the Burt Bacharach song The Look of Love. She had one heck of a voice. And, to my mind, only occasionally had good enough songs to sing that would show it off. This is definitely one of those. And there's that fantastic jazz backing:
Just discovered this, apologies if posted before. Someone obviously changed young Jimmy’s mind at some point about doing cancer research!
After the horrors of this week, here´s perfect antidote. Just chill. I think it is absolutely beautiful.
Ah! Love Pat Benetar. I adore We Belong and Treat Me Right... Haven't listened to her stuff for ages so thanks, No1J
The Pretenders and Talk of the Town. I thought I was over this stuff, but heard a wee bit on a neighbour's radio and it has been bugging me all day. This is the album track, so they are either miming or they can play brilliantly. And the video quality is excellent from 1980: Actually, I think it's a tad fast, so maybe they are playing it. I always liked Chrissy's 'I made a weesh'.
OK I'm going to get these out of my head before they linger. Message of Love. Always remember that Chrissy Hynde loved Oscar Wilde's writing. Spot the obvious line in this: And, I Go To Sleep. Why these three [one in previous]? The giveaway is in this video. They're all off the Pretenders II album, which is the token Pretenders album I have.
Pretenders II is another great album from my youth TSS and I also had a major crush on Chrissie naturally.. Such a shame that James Honeyman-Scott succumbed to his personal battle with narcotic abuse as he was a brilliantly expressive Lead Guitarist with a unique (for the time) jangly 60's style of playing which combined with Chrissie's wonderful rich vocals and great songwriting augured well for a great future together in that band. This was my other favourite track from that album...
This is her heart rending personal tribute to him which she emotionally sang at Live Aid, brought a lump to my throat that day and is a personal highlight for me...
