Somewhat formulaic. Even "Under The Boardwalk" didn't reach the charts (top 20) in the UK (pretty high in the US obviously). I know I never heard the "Sand in my shoes" song until I started researching the Drifters in the early 70's. "Save the Last Dance for me" and maybe "Stand by Me" were the only singles I remember in the top 10 in the UK. Loved 'em.
I'm intrigued how you know about this tune Quill. I hadn't realized it had reached the top 10 in the UK, (in '79/80, before you were born I believe ?). I know their ex-Manager/promoter (Gerry Young) through my missus ( a friend of G.Y.) They were an excellent presence on stage. I'm not trying to be a prat here Quill, I'm just happy to know they may have made some sort of mark over there. ( I think a couple of the band members may have lived there for a brief time).
A good decade and change before I arrived on these shores, tc. I think I first came across them when a neighbour of mine gave me an absolute ****ton of records, and there was a copy of Metro Music in there somewhere. That intro... one of my absolute faves.
