The July Meeting starts with a fascinating renewal of the Bahrain Trophy, even if this season’s combatants may turn out to be ordinary. The concern with Queen’s Vase runner-up Barbados is that he may want to get his toe in, whereas Nayef Road – half a length behind in third – seems okay with any ground. It is hard to make a case for John Gosden’s Waldstern as the best race he has contested was the Zetland Stakes, where he was behind Nate The Great (just over a length third) and neither of them have suggested they are pattern class this term, with Archie Watson’s charge out with the washing in the Queen’s Vase. Spanish Mission was a commendable second in the Cocked Hat and steps up in trip here on only his second turf start and might find enough improvement if others disappoint; however, Eagles By Day’s third in the King Edward VII, with Cocked Hat winner Private Secretary behind looks the best form on offer if he is happy with the extra furlong. Virtually all the form in the Princess Of Wales's Stakes comes from Royal Ascot. Dashing Willoughby won the Queen’s Vase, but all his form is on easy ground. Mirage Dancer was third in the Hardwicke with 2018 Derby winner Masar fifth after a troubled race and Communique last. Desert Encounter was last in the Prince Of Wales following on from being last in the Sheema Classic, whilst Baghdad steps up into pattern company after winning the Duke Of Edinburgh. I hope that Masar can bounce back and collect this on the way to better things but the odds are too short given that there must be a question about how he is going to be ridden in what may be a tactical race. Will Doyle try to make all? Buick did to win the Craven last year. Half the field in the 3:00 do not seem to have a best distance. It is unclear what Richard Hughes is doing with Top Breeze. He won over six at HQ and was then dropped to five for his next two starts, last time being second behind Street Parade, who has never run beyond five. Magical Wish drops back to six after being second over seven. Before that he had been third in a valuable six furlong race at York with Dazzling Dan, Rathbone, Blown By Wind and Barbill behind. Which one’s turn is it today? Gabrial The Wire is another dropping from seven after two good wins from five 2019 starts. Aplomb has two career wins over six from just six career starts but has never run on turf going without the word soft in it. PHILIPINE COBRA was a neck behind Street Parade last time over five but made all over six at York before that. She is reunited with her previous winning jockey today off bottom weight and 16/1 is my idea of an each-way price.
Epsom 7.05 - Arbuckle 50/1 e/w. Hoping for another surprise from the Madgwick stable after Miss Recycled popped up on similar form figures at 100/1 a couple of weeks back at Brighton.
Today I'll be sticking to the method of gambling that saves untold amounts of money and not backing anything Mr R Moore is on, I will then put that saving on Danecase 8.50 Newbury as it's on my tracker. Moore than likely have same outcome though
Just the ITV7 (5p e/w doubles) and a 5p e/w L15 today for me. All with skybet BOG. Eagles by Day (7/4) One Step Beyond (5/2) Platinum Star (9/1) Majaalis (7/4) Aplomb (7/1) Duneflower (6/4) Mirage Dancer (9/4) L15 - All at Newmarket 150 - Waldstern (9/1) 300 - Magical Wish (7/1) 405 - Led Astray (7/1) 510 - Global Gift (5/1) Apologies if I have jinxed any of yours. Good luck all
Just had a good look at Danny Tudhope’s rides for today. I think he has a live chance of at least a double from his 4. So I’ve gone for small stakes doubles, trebles and acca.
A couple of fancies at Newmarket today... 1:50 - Nayef Road @ 5/1 3:00 - Top Breeze @ 16/1 4:40 - Turgenev @ 15/8 Cheers...
I think we may have seen the last of the 2018 Derby winner, Masar. Well beaten at Royal Ascot, well beaten at the July Meeting. It was a small field and Doyle just allowed the favourite to pull his race away instead of trying something else like going on at a better clip to settle his mount. Ironic that the winner is owned by Sheikh Mohammed’s son – he won’t be on speaking terms with him tonight and no news on efforts to get one of his wives back to Dubai where he can deal with her like he deals with his daughters. Congratulations to Team Johnston on Communique’s win, though, giving a penalty and a beating to his rivals – that is four wins from four starts at HQ and the Jockey Club Stakes at the Guineas meeting looks a lot better than it did with two subsequent Group 1 winners behind.
Interesting times here 2yo carrying 9.6 9yo carrying 9.1 30 mins later WFA the 2yo would be receiving 38lb. So that is equivalent to giving the 9yo 43lb and ran the 7f in 3.07 secs faster, despite being slightly unbalanced over 1f out OK the 9yo was winning a Class 5 but that seems one hell of a performance from the 2yo. The 2nd in the 2yo race had won his previous race (a maiden) effortlessly by 6l. Clearly this Grove Ferry likes decent ground and will be worth keeping an eye on in any future 7f race when the ground is good/good to firm
