John Charles medals up for auction

An absolute legend that would grace any club's first 11 in any era of the game, including Champions League title holders Barcelona today!

Hope these get bought by a museum or some benefactor who will donate them so that they are on public view...maybe The National Football Museum?

This is the kind of thing that lottery money should be used for, buy them and put them in the National Football Museum. <ok>

Agreed Proph. I read somewhere that, given relative currencies, his transfer to Serie A would be a world transfer record today. The best Welsh sportsman ever?

Difficult to label anyone that, certainly the best Welsh Footballer IMO, the only one that can come anywhere close is Giggs.

As for the best Welsh Sportsman

By sheer virtue of his record and achievements I'd have to give that accolade to Joe Calzaghe <ok>

It always pisses me off the way he is always omitted from the great footballers lists. This man was superb as a defender as well as a forward, there was no end to his abilities. He almost single handedly won the World Cup for Wales in 1958, until he got injured before the Quarter Finals. At least the Italians know a great player when they see one!

Not to mention a superb singing voice for after match celebrations!

Why can't Bates splash the cash and put them on show at the club. Afterall he was one of our legends and a great ambassador for the game worldwide. maybe it would put a smile back on some of the faces of our fans who he calls morons

Good point actually... the "experts" bang on about Hurst, Greaves, Best and so forth... could any of these guys have marshalled a defence as well as be an effective goal scorer??

I hope one of his former clubs buy them and put them on display (even if it's Leeds ;))

I think the museum would be my first choice as he should be more widely celebrated and his achievements brought to as big an audience as possible.

But if a club were to buy them it would be better than sitting hidden away in private ownership, but would seem a bit strange if it was to display medals which he won in another team/league...in another country for that matter...

I wouldn't be suprised to see Juventus buy them, he is still a legend over there, be a shame to see them go to Italy, but at least he was appreciated over there <ok>

The article has been updated now stating:

Two medals won by late Welsh football great John Charles during his time in Italy have sold at auction for £8,200.

One which was given to him for helping Juventus to the Italian league title in 1960, fetched £5,800 and the other went for £2,400 at the sale in Hull.

Every time there was a raffle for a good cause John would give a cap or medal away to help the cause a lot of these was bought by Wally Springett so it might be him
