Well that doesn't work now does it? Because season after season Liverpool fans moan at how easy United get it in every draw for the Group stages or the knockout rounds.

You even knocked our acheivement of getting to last years final after beating Schalke in the semis

I've never had an argument with your five wins at all but it would be nice if you occasionally accepted that yes, it was easier to win in those days. You also had to be league or defending champions to be in it too which is the other side of the coin.

The point is that when it reaches the knock out stages of the CL the usual suspects are around, and they tend to be the big european teams as always with the exceptions now being Chelsea and City who have joined in. You do not now get the likes of Valur, Oster, Arges etc, etc., teams that were **** then and are worse now, in the knock out stages.

The likes of Malmo wouldn't be seen anywhere near a final either.

*edit - Chelsea and City were NOT big back in the day. (City are bloody massive now of course)

This is the other thing. They diminish our acheivements in the Club World Cup when again they don't take into account you need to win the Champions League to appear in it. I would say sides like LDU Quito or Internacional are on the same level of most of the sides they needed to beat in the European Cup 30 odd years ago.

    I'd agree 100% with that.

Sorry but you can't generalise all fans like that. You will never hear me moan about such minor things <ok>

Yeah fair comment. But the fact is we were in the competition and could only play who was put in front of us, nothing more nothing less. The champions league in my opinion should still be for 'champions' only. Yeah that would obviously take our 2005 win away but so be it. A champions league should be for champions, just like the old European cup was. The fact that finishing 4th can get you a ticket to play in it and possibly the ability to become European champions is nothing less than scandalous.

I agree with that too but it will never happen of course. It'd be a european league for definite if UEFA ever suggested it.
The competition would be dimished as well as it is such good television.

Can you imagine the competition if it was
    Real or Barca.
United or Liverpool (being kind to you there, for arguments sake!)
    Inter or AC.

It wouldn't be as good so now is what it is.

I would guarantee if anybody posted a thread on the Liverpool board titled "Do Manchester United get easy draws in the Champions League?" that 95% if not more would say yes.

Yeah possibly. But deep down I think everyone knows that is just rival fans making unfair banter.

I personally couldn't give a **** who you get drawn with, none of my business, I'll worry about our next game thanks <ok>

We've been held back slightly aswell in Europe, the Munich air crash wiped out the majority of our most talented players, we may well have won another couple in the late 50s and early 60, if it wasnt for that. It took SMB along time to rebuild the side.

The fact we were banned from Erope aswell in the late 80s and early 90s held all English clubs back, while our European rivals progressed, and we didn't bridge that gap until 99. Had we not been banned I'm sure we would have won it before 99 under SAF.

Fair play to Liverpool theyve won it 5, but we've won more League titles and more FA Cups

I'll watch both. Probably watch City live as it's all new to them! Then watch Utd later...

Or possibly both at the same time!

You have to remember though the EPL was poor pre italian league started to go crap and Barcelona became good.

1993-2006 Italian league was the strongest league in the world.

    Milan
    Juve

Have better Champions league pedigree than any english club.

That's the luxury I have. I work for a bookies as a football trader so I have two LG plasma's either side of me one will have United on, the other City which I will cast my eye on occasionally. Can't wait. United and Benfica should be a decent opening game and though I think City will win tonight, it will be interesting to see how they find it. Don't forget this is Napoli's debut as well they and their fans will be well up for it.
