The British musician was presented with the award by President Emmanuel Macron during a ceremony at the Élysée Palace. President Macron's office praised Sir Elton, 72, as a "melodic genius" and as one of the first gay artists to give a voice to the LGBT community. He used his acceptance speech to promote his charity work. The performer's charity, The Elton John Aids Foundation, has generated more than £310m for HIV prevention, education and support.
"AIDS still exists, still strikes and continues to advance," warned the head of state before some 2,000 people gathered in the courtyard of the Elysee. He hoped that the next triennial conference of the Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, which will meet on October 10th in Lyon, can raise more than € 13 billion for the next three years. "The figure of €13 billion is the minimum to prevent the resumption of epidemics. If we want to end HIV in 2030 as the UN has set, this is insufficient.
