Imagine if Vettel had wound up third. He'd have gone completely bonkers.

Apparently mercedes changed the hydraulics on Lewis's car in parc ferme to a differently designed system on race day, but as the FIA couldn't decide if it was similar to the one he used during qualifying, they decided it was and won't penalise them.

Just imagine how Vettel would have reacted if LeClerc had taken pos 2 and he was demoted even further!!!! I would guess Ferrari failed to tell him on purpose. I think they would have told him to back off due to 'cooling or brake issues' if he had got within 5 sec. For the team points it made no difference but to moral of their $30 million a year it would have been a real knife in the back.
So if they did 'forget' to tell him then it was a lucky mistake if they didn't tell him on purpose it was a good move. They can't be seen to kick Vettel when he is down...

Where's that come from? They had to fix a hydraulic leak on the car prior to the race, but that's all I'm aware of.

Agree with that 100%. I also couldn't understand the pundits opinion at the time. I wonder how they'll see the incident by the next race.

Jackie Stewart says penalty is bullshit too.

Seems to me anyone who ever actually sat in a car knows vettel had nowhere to go.

The sad thing is that if vettel merely appeared into the wall and took hamilton out he would be closer in championship today and got no punishment

The sad thing is something really serious occurred early in this race thst could have been incredibly dangerous at high speed. Nobody is talking about land Norris being really luck where thst suspension gave way.

    That was potentially lethal.

Well, there will always be potentially lethal component failures, that's one thing that can never be truly eradicated. The odd thing about that one is that they couldn't see that it was going in to meltdown from the pits and pull him in.

Just a thought - you could have Mad Max's brain as the "component", and those sentences still work.

Yep.. though his brain is far more prone to failure than your average o-ring.

Nowhere to go? What about keeping more to the left after he had correct the car? Or what about slowing a bit to control the car if he didn't haver it under control? Didn't he say he saw Lewis? So why was he still going right towards the wall after he had the car under control? I am not saying he should or should not get a penalty, all I am saying is it is bullshit to say the penalty is bullshit...he had options and he took the one that would give a penalty, which is rejoining in a dangerous manner. If Lewis had crashed into the wall trying to avoid Vettel, what would have been Stewart's verdict then? You can't just refuse to give out penalties and put drivers at risk to make the race more interesting, though. But I would have given the penalty after the race. And this is what I think the rule should be – the winner keeps the race, but after the race he gets a grid penalty to be served at the next race. I believe that would have been more acceptable to all.

By the way, if he had put Lewis in the wall then he would have had a bigger penalty or maybe a DNF, so the points difference between them wouldn't change from before the race. But Bottas would be closer to the lead...lol

Its very clear that the car was headed for that wall irrespective. IMO he did well to get it under control without hitting wall never mind hamilton.

Hamilton did well to try it on but then get out of it.

NONE OF THIS MATTERS. the race ended once the officals got involved. END OF.

all hamilton needed to do was trundle round behind vettel and the race was his. he kept getting close then backing off.

as for questioning former world champions who all agree then penalty is bullshit.... well... you have the right its all opinion.

My view is vettel might be **** and full of errors but thats racing. If a penalty is the result of making an error now which lets be frank hamilton wasn't actually close enough to exploit... hamilton caught up enough to stick a nose where no nose should be and then pull out of it... fair play to him...

to be clear I want to see actual racing not tyre and fuel and engine saving modes with a deeply noncompetitive series. Last weekend for the first time all season we got a race where it might have happened. The stewards and F1 robbed us of that. The robbed hamilton of the chance to grind vettel to paste by passing him on the one track where ferrari might be quicker. I believe hamilton would have passed vettel on the more regular passing spot just as bottas passed ricciardo.

    F1 is done.
