Guy on Twitter telling me that Britain was "utterly defeated" by 1940 and that only Russian intervention saved us when they eventually joined the war in 1941 after having a peace treaty with Der Nazi since 1939. I'm getting the distinct feeling that history is not this guy's strong point. Clearly he's never heard of the North African campaign 1940-43.
Did the Normandy beaches for my first wedding anniversary last year. The mrs was chuffed that I spent most of my time there crying. Was a truly humbling experience. Even found my great uncles grave over there. He was only 18. I stayed in a fishing village just along from arrowmanche.
Probably not appropriate for D Day commemorations. But Russia’s contribution to WWII should never be forgotten. On another note, the Soviet government produced medals shortly after the war, intended for all the British merchant Navy crewmen who served on the North Atlantic convoys. But because of the Cold War, the survivors didn’t get to collect their medals until about 20 years ago. Quite a few had died of old age by then.
Yep, the simple fact is the war would never have been won without Russian/Soviet intervention but we shouldn't forget the Russkies were in bed with the Nazis until 1941, also the Russians could not have won without help from us and the Commonwealth troops and the Yanks.
Adolph thought we'd be allies 'cos of how much the Royals and some politicians sucked up to him. Ruskies might have been in bed with the Nazis but lest we forget Chamberlain and his letter from Herr Hitler, it didn't make us look much better. Peace in our time and all that. Year later the Germans invaded Poland.
With a little help from Russia. The Soviet invasion of Poland was a military operation by the Soviet Union without a formal declaration of war. On 17 September 1939, the Soviet Union invaded Poland from the east, sixteen days after Germany invaded Poland from the west. Subsequent military operations lasted for the following 20 days and ended on 6 October 1939 with the two-way division and annexation of the entire territory of the Second Polish Republic by Germany and the Soviet Union.
