Which is why stats should always be viewed at for amusement rather than for anything serious. Van Dijk's stats compared to the other CBs just aren't as good: less ariel %, less tackles per 90, less interceptions, etc and yet we all know what a monster he is. I think sometimes the media and fans - not necessarily you - get carried away with numbers when eyes are simply a better measure.

I've no doubt he's going to be a top CB, but we need to believe in our youth too like we did with Trent and hopefully Brewster next season because Gomez was superb up until that random broken bone. Yes, VVD surely helped with that, but that's why he should be playing! To learn and watch from the best. Gomez will only get better in our back 4. 70mill is a huge outlay when we could have someone potentially just as good in a year or so.
