A fair few people seem to undervalue the Super cup, and I'm not sure I understand why. It's arguably the hardest cup to have a chance at (having to first win one of the two European cups which is damn hard enough) and then play usually another of Europe's top clubs again. In theory, it should be the final game of the season and one of the most prestigious of them all...but it's not. Is it because it's held at the start of the season rather than at the end?
it's just a preseason tinpot. always was, always will be. if real madrid manager last year said.. you can't sack me I won the super cup he'd be laughed out of town
He, nor any other manager, would ever say that though would they. It goes hand in hand with one or other of the two biggest club trophies. We're not talking about the Asia Cup here.
Said this on a number of occasions and been battered for it I value every trophy in offer I have even tried to offer other arguments but to no avail So just me and you watching it
So? Have you ever seen an open top bus parade for a super cup... or world club cup? You might get one barely for a league cup if a small club wins it. The community (aka fa slush fund) shield is not a real trophy. It just isn't. This is just a step up from it and is a UEFA slush fund. The reality is I bet you couldn't name who we played in the 5 times we competed in the super cup but you could in europa/UEFA cup and the champions league. By the by... it's whennon in this venue and timing for years... we've jot had this problem so I consider it a first world problem. It's in the end a nice warm weather training camp.... if you do research you'll find there will be one real team innit and the rest little confederations. We will play 2 games. One v a small team aka warm up reserves and one game prob v south american team. The end. It's a jolly. We can then come home refreshed for festive period with games in hand.
And you've really not answered the question... I know the world club cup is a bit of a sham given how poor quality the other football federations are, the charity shield is precisely that, but the Super cup is different. I said it SHOULD be a prestigious cup competition given it's a clash between the two current European champions and it's not. I've always wondered why it's not held in high regard.
Its the same as the community shield. Its a one off match. Yes its its the winners of cl and europy but by that stance community shield is winners of FA and PL (if we are equating CL with near enough pl and fa to europy). Both are effectively friendlies imo.
In summary, most really really want to be part of the Super Cup but don't actually give a **** about winning it
The club clearly holds it in high regard hence including it on the trophy wall Tbh though this is the first time I've thought much about it. If we win it does it just give us bragging rights over Chelsea or does it say something else? It's a bit weird this year anyway because we would have played against another PL team whoever won the EL so it's sort of not measuring the competition in the same way.
If we lose, and despite still only having one to their two, we'd still have the better combination of trophies... EL & SC vs CL No contest is it...? And I rate the EL very highly at that too, it's just not a patch on the CL (or PL)
I feel the potential is there for it to be a huge climax to the season, but like the FA cup, it just hasn't been ran / organised / promoted / marketed well at all.
I think it's more to do with a superior vs inferior competition. One's clearly better than the other, much like the PL and FA Cup forming the Community Shield. Winning the CL is the pinnacle of European football. The World Club Cup makes sense as it expands out to a larger geographical area but is a joke because the quality just isn't the same elsewhere.
But it’s getting the team used to winning finals, winning trophies. Put it this way I’d rather win them than not
I get what you say about the club world cup, it's a farce. But my point about the Super cup is that it shouldn't be so inferior. There's literally one way to compete in it and that's to beat everyone else to become champion of Europe. It's the hardest cup competition to enter...but it's worthless. I think it's a shame, so much potential - that's my point.
sigghhh... and when utd used to add in charity shield to pretend they were more successful they were laughed at...
it wasn't even invented by UEFA. it was a Dutch journalist taken by Ajax. my view is the champions league is THE decisive comp. the europa is 2nd tier. the super cup is almost the equivilant of prem champions v championship champions... perhaps an exaggeration but.. my.point is it's not a competition... it's a show piece.
Maybe they should move it to week after the CL final the south american clubs can be excellent. It is a very arrogant attitude generally displayed by the english Most of the Europeans take the super cup and world club seriously Just like we have an arrogant approach to the comps in this country I just dont get it. I totally understand why teams cannot realistically fight on all four fronts and so prioritise differently (save city) But a cup is a cup. Every game is there to be won a game is a game, we have always had a weird attitude to sport in this country imho
You can say the same for the Community Shield; got top win the FA Cup or PL (or possibly second). You've got to have done something decent.
I'd rather win the World Club Cup than the Super Cup. To be able to say you are world champions shouldn't be ignored. Doesn't change the fact that none of the other teams would even win the SPL!
