yep a first: "In 1950 The Dell, where Southampton then played their games, became the first ground to have floodlighting installed permanently in England. On the 31st of October 1950 they played their first game there, welcoming Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic to the ground for a friendly. The first ‘official’ game played under floodlights took place when a Football Combination XI played Tottenham Hotspur on the first of October 1951"
To be fair you say that like we had no choice in the matter, it was a clear policy by the club. Edit - To that extent at least.
Exactly. And it's worth remembering the winter of that year: being 2nd with a quarter of the season played is one thing, but we were in 3rd with only 14 matches remaining in the season. But faced with a realistic chance to make Champions League and a lack of depth in attack, we decided it wasn't worth the outlay to acquire more than a couple fringy loan players. And when our manager at the time warned that our approach would lead to the squad atrophying, we shrugged and then acted shocked when he departed a few months thereafter.
Madrid is in a transitional period; they got oooooold, and without Cristiano Ronaldo papering over the cracks, they also got not-terribly-good. He can afford to be picky at the moment; being at Spurs is hardly hurting his career, and the likes of Madrid won't take "our squad is made up as septuagenarians who aren't that great anymore" as an answer if he doesn't instantly challenge for every bit of silverware. He might jump at it. He might even succeed there. It's a huge risk, though, given how much sheen he might lose from a bad year and an unceremonious exit.
Wouldmt worry as Poch is pbviously not going to Madrid. Regardless of the CL result, Madrid wouldn't have hired Zidane back with and plan to remove him before he had had a go at it. Now i know Madrid are ruthless but they arent that stupid.
I love Ralph as much as the rest of you and I feel he is a good fit for us, but we are getting ahead of ourselves in thinking big clubs are looking at him. He has to be a real success here for that....and that would please me very much.
No idea mate. On that note though, surely we're in for some kind of windfall, whoever wins the CL tonight?
It’s one of my reasons for wanting Liverpool to win. Can’t imagine Gazzaniga had a champions league add on.
To be fair Saints had a wonderful opportunity to really become a top six club...........If they had taken up the offer from the guy that owned the speedway stadium not too far from the dell. He offered to buy into the club using the land on which they could build a stadium that would have held 45000 plus. This was in the late 50's early 60's time frame. The then board were so narrow minded they dismissed the offer without even considering it. (According to the echo at the time) Certainly the fans around that time and business's really thought it was a good idea and offered to take a stake in the adventure.
A few million quid to p**s on another Carrillo in return for endless crowing from the bin dippers. No thanks
