See our new No.10 seems to be copping a bit of flak on here after missing a couple of chances last night.

.............Lets get things straight right away. The formation and way we play leaves us with the need to play a big strong centre forward with the ability to hold the ball up. This rules out Agyemang/Smith/Campbell as they haven't the size nor ability to do this.... Bothroyd is easily one of the best at this in the divison hence his England call up last season.

Yeh he missed a couple of whammies last night, but Rooney misses sitters as well. Bothroyd was class against Newcastle and we looked like only half the team when he went off, once he gets his first goal he will get plenty.

Get behind the guy, as he is a fantastic player.

    Rant over.

I'm guilty of it, that right foot of his is only good for standing on!
Hope last night doesn't affect his confidence too much.

Fair point but you have to remember the history. We have all been crying out for a striker who can score for the last few years. Have we had one since Furlong?? Sitting, watching last night I was reminded of Peter Crouch and Benitez' confidence in him when he had his dry patch. It paid off eventually and I hope the same will be true of Jay, hopefully sooner rather than later. Great time to be a Ranger.

I thought he work his a*se off last night, and led the line fantastically. Yes he missed a couple but thats his 1st start from memory. He's not the only one, SWP should have done better with the volley in the second half and the header in the first to be honest. (But boy an I glad we have him.)
JB's hold up play was good and lets not forget we play a formation where he is isolated up top as a lone striker, waiting for other to run in behind. It is a selfless task and I for one am glad we have him......Just sayin :)

I think your bang on Bakes . Its a tough role, and thankless to a certain extent. Its about bringing the likes of Tarbs and SWP into the game and creating chances for them. To play our system we need Him up top, the only other player at the club that could play that role is HH. Campbell will not play uptop by himself , it just won't work. I thought that was his best game so far and he will score goals.

Getting back to Boothroyd, I feel the goals will come even if by default due to the fact he has clowns feet does anyone know what boot size he takes I had never noticed before must be 16 or 17, also explains why he trips over so much!

Good post <ok> He started against Bolton though.

Jay Bothroyd kind of reminds me of Bobby Zamora, a player that took time to settle in the premier league.

A good post i thought his display was one of the highlights of the night and his partnership with SWP will score goals plenty of them

Unfortunately, was otherwise booked last night. I could almost hear the crowd though, as I was at the Apollo, took the kids to see Spelbound (the gymnasts that won Britain's got Talent last year) as a birthday treat. Spent much of it trying to check the score on my phone.... although they were very good. Some of the other acts were.... less so.

Thanks for thinking of me though!

I'm not concerned, I'm sure he'll come good and prove very dangerous. He was in the right place at the right time, the slightest of changes would have bagged him a brace. Patience and encouragement required.

Even my Dad sitting next to me last night was grating on me with the ''we need to replace Bothroyd comments''!!

Isn't this the only game he's started except Bolton? (where no one did themselves any justice). Coupled with the fact he's just gotten over a virus and hasn't been training much I thought he played well, the miss aside.
