It makes sense for a newly promoted team. Interesting that SW also said how good Citeh had been about the loan arrangements.
The loan rules in the Prem are more restrictive right? Is it only 2 loanees in the match day squad? Not that that stops us bringing 3 in, but might struggle to guarantee clubs that their player will get good game time given that restriction. Interesting in that Webber video that we've been after Roberts for a while, so clearly it's been well thought through.
My take away from the SW video was how much emphasis they put on the personality of the player and team fit. Also interesting to hear SW say he offers something different on the wing when I had assumed he was virtually like-for-like competition for Buendia and Hernandez.
I have to say I don't know a great deal (i.e. zilch) about him, but if what you say is true he sounds like he could be an asset and a good fit Although didn't we say that about Ben Marshall?......
I'm not advocating the Fulham-esque attitude by blowing £100m on players but I still fail to see why SW has a self-imposed WAR CHEST limit of circa £20m given the rewards that even a single season in the top flight can - and will bring. Team spirit, hard work and togetherness is all well and good, but can those attributes alone deliver on the biggest stage of all? More on Roberts arrival. https://www.pinkun.com/norwich-city...ed-to-finally-sign-long-term-target-1-6080529
I think the £20m figure is expectation management, both for the fans and selling clubs. I wouldn't be surprised if we can afford to go a little over that. Equally though, we could spend £100m and go down, we could spend nothing and go down - the reality of a club in our situation is making sure we're best placed to bounce right back. If we spend more, are we going to see long term returns for it? Realistically if we spend £50m, we're either paying exorbitant fees, excessive wages, or signing too many players, all of which could upset our promotion-winning players, and chances are that type of signing won't hold value. Short term thinking in our last stint made bouncing back much harder than it should have been, given the financial advantage from parachute payments. If we "only" spend £20m, the rest of our earnings can go on long term improvements to the club. It's mad that after 3+1 seasons in the Prem, we had to raise money from fans last year to get our training ground up to the level of a top championship side. There's probably numerous other, less obvious, areas in which the club can put funds to use which will benefit the club for decades. Fundamentally, staying up is a secondary priority next season. The main aim is to make sure we are absolutely, 100%, too good for the championship going forwards.
Spot on DH. Spending has to be in line with long term planning. We've only just got over the mistakes of three years ago - players who suited AN but not his successor, at prices we could ill afford. Now it's different. Loans make sense as they don't cost as much for PL players. If we don't survive, we're ready to go again in the Championship without the burden of expensive players who don't want to be here. The players we do sign need to commit long term to fit what we have now. Team work and togetherness can make the difference, as it did back in the 90s. Fitness is another factor and we have that. Further signings will strengthen us further, but we already have a strong squad.
Yes I agree what I take away from that, maybe wrongly, is that if we are saying we only maybe need to bring in 4 players and 2 of them on loan then potentially we could be looking at 2 £10m players!
From what I've seen Roberts is different from Buendia and Hernandez in that he likes to take on and beat players at pace, with high speed trickery. Like them he'll be a real bonus in counterattacks and his ability to make key passes when running at pace will be a real asset. As Dunc says, all three of them in the attack would be a real handful for opposing defences.
Remember that it includes wages as well though. If we sign Rhodes, it's the fee paid plus around £2m in wages. Each of the loans will probably be at least £1m in wages and any loan fees, so more like £5-6m each for two more players, or £10-12m including wages.
Meanwhile there's also good news on the SW front: "City's sporting director confirmed he has had no contact from the Red Devils, following national speculation touting him with a key role in a new set-up at Old Trafford. Webber plotted the Canaries' thrilling Championship title win, but has unfinished business at Carrow Road. "I have to repay Delia and Michael for the support they have shown me and my family. For me to leave now would leave the club in the lurch," he said. "It is easy now to get plaudits for achieving something fantastic but this time last year there was a lot of question marks over myself and Daniel (Farke). I never felt that support waver from Delia and Michael. To leave here would be unbelievably difficult. When Daniel committed to his three-year contract I gave him my word. Not that I would be here for three years, but that I am also committed to what we are trying to do here and I am not going to suddenly get up and leave. I would not want to let him and his staff down or the owners. That is from my side." Good news indeed. https://www.edp24.co.uk/sport/norwich-city/canaries-stuart-webber-manchester-united-links-1-6080296
Exactly DH - it's like any of us thinking we'd like a holiday, but having toput it on a credit card or similar, as we haven't saved any of our bonuses that we've had in previous years!!! Edit - Watching the SW video, gives me the impression of a man on a mission, rather than one who is about to depart for ManUre or ANYWHERE else!!! Webber's comments on player recruitment to EDP's Paddy Davitt are interesting, don't think we will be spending £15m on a goalkeeper this transfer window (or any other player) https://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/spo...ies-stuart-webber-transfer-strategy-1-6080372 All about the spirit & togetherness of the squad, not how how big your name or ego is
Canaries U23's Striker Mason Bloomfield joins Crawley on Season long loan https://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/spo...riker-joins-league-two-side-on-loan-1-6082082 Here's hoping he will blossom into a top talent for the canaries in the future when his loan ends
Like the Morris deal, good these kind of loans are getting sorted early, so the player gets a full pre-season and is competing for a place in the starting XI from the beginning, rather than trying to displace an incumbent. Also like Morris, another player who desperately needs a highly successful loan if he's going to prove he can cut it in the football league, never mind at Norwich.
