There's 2 main reasons I can think of for not being a huge fan of London and 1 major reason why i like it. Dislike 1 - It's just not what I'm used to. That's not the fault of the place at all but I'm used to the countryside and much prefer it. I used to have to go to London for business and it was everything from the air (which just tasted rank to be honest), the heat to - if I'm honest - the people I met. London is huuuuuge and you are correct about the fact that I will have met a very unrepresentative cross-section of the city, there was tons of people and no-one wanted to talk, they were hugely anti-social and generally needlessly aggressive (I made the mistake of driving once and everyone was honking their horns at everyone for everything to the extent that it was a pointless thing to do, that was pre-congestion charges so perhaps it's calmed a bit now). Dislike 2 - It's over-hyped. There's a lot of people who make negative comments about Cities they've never actually been to, I remember Samuel L Jackson doing a talk show about a movie he filmed in Liverpool and the interviewer made a disparaging comment about the City and Jackson started saying he finds it shocking in London how everyone seems to pity him for having to go there to shoot a film and most of them have never been - he loved the place. Everyone, everywhere has a bit of that mentality about them but - in my limited experience - Londoners were the worst, there was an assumption that everyone else in the country wanted to live in London. Like 1 - It has so many things that you just need to go visit and see. I could spent a day in each of the museums and just walk around looking at the architecture for a week. So many shows/films have been set there that every section has so much iconic imagery, genuinely fantastic and I'm taking my kids this Summer. If I'm honest my 1 main like is bigger than any dislikes. Wath - now there's a dump.
People are English too not that it matters but I don't feel like London is true representation of pure English filth.
If by friendly you mean everyone knows everyone else’s business, wants to know yours, and gossips endlessly about their neighbors, then yes.
