Reports in France say that the club are set to trigger a €1.5 clause in the deal that saw the defender move on loan this season. Kone enjoyed a successful season, playing 31 games as Strasbourg finished 11th in the table, as well as winning the Coupe de la Ligue. There had been some concerns that the Ivory Coast international could return to Sunderland to further increase the club's wage commitments, but speaking to the Roker Rapport podcast, Sunderland Chairman Stewart Donald said that he did not expect the player to return. "He's due back, but I think we've done a deal - I don't expect him to return" Donald said. Donald also revealed that the club will pocket around £1 million as part of the deal that saw attacking midfielder Wahbi Khazri join AS Saint-Etienne last summer. Khazri had an excellent campaign, scoring thirteen goals. The French side were one of the season's biggest success stories, finishing fourth and qualifying for the UEFA Europa League. That has triggered an additional boost for the Black Cats, who Donald said are in 'great shape' financially. Hooray . . . . some good news ( I hope)
Good news. I was surprised to hear Kone might return given the season Strasbourg had and him being a regular. It’s not just the fee it’s the £45k a week dark cloud, so that’s great stuff. Fair play on Khazri he was a good player and with the extra we’ve got about what he was worth back.
Interesting. But a £3million profit? Where’s the transfer budget? I’m all for the sustainability route but that can’t happen with a club this size, with its costs, in the 3rd tier. Interested to see what we do investment wise, but there needs to be a playing budget for Jack as of Monday gone.
Shame going from a £20m big from Everton to 1.5m Euros. Every little helps given the owners are crying out for investment.
Thing is the form that he showed that season under Big Sam he was worth it in today's market, he was immense. Shows just how far we've fallen.
