There you go again ....................... Lamela was probably our first player to understand and buy into Pochettino's method. Injuries have blighted the second part of his Spurs career but to call him a one trick pony is very unfair. On form he is still a player who can make a difference.
Injuries blighted the first half of his career too. Remember the back problem that kept him out for 5 months in his first season? All the niggly calf injuries in his second? His best season for us by a country mile was #3 - the 'Leicester' season. He stayed remarkably injury free that whole year and notched up a solid amount of goals and assists, becoming a key component in our 'press' tactic. And then the hip injury hit. Goodbye for another 14 months. Then finally fully fit at the start of this season hits the ground running and is easily our best player over the first few months. And then all the groin/calf/hamstring/plexor strains start to hit. The guy literally cannot put a run together. The fact that every season a different part of his anatomy seems to be cursed is worrisome. This isn't a case of old injuries reoccurring rather fresh injuries that the medical team will need to be mindful of in his management. He already trains slightly differently to the rest of the squad and has to run in a slightly unusual way due to the hip op. There has to come a point where you say 'enough' and put the horse out of its misery. Were it not for his injury problems I would be offering him a new contract every year. He is that crucial to the squad and it would be almost impossible to find a player as good as him to sit on the bench most of the time. But it is time to cut our losses and sell while he still has some market value.
Yes a comprehensive analysis of the player, I agree CK although I am not as sure as you that he will not be able to make a major contribution again. Coming back from injury and slotting into a team takes some players longer than others and as always I am happy to leave that decision to Pochettino.
