Not if you are on the losing side maybe not.....but a majority is a majority no matter how you want to look at it.
The public voted heavily to reject AV in a referendum, does that mean the public wouldn't vote yes if there was a vote that just said, another voting system? The leave campaign that people voted for had no democratic accountability and didn't need to put a plan of action together like the government would. The referendum didn't say what to do. You are ignoring that fact. The government has not, and is coming up with plans. And the public don't want to do any of them. Thus we are in this situation. A democratic system is about monitoring the wishes of the public and changing course as the will of the public changes. This is why we have regular elections. If you want this sorted out democratically then this needs to be done. Theres also no democratic reason to rule out remaining, like theres no reason to rule out leaving later on. One decision and done, giving all the power to the 'winner' isn't democracy. It's the system of fascist states, like Hitler and Mussolini's used. And it really scares me that now even you are asking what the point of democracy is... This wave of nationalistic populism, and now attacks on our democratic institutions really scares me.
Excuse me all referendums in the past have been acted upon by all parties......if they were democratic then why wasn't the last one.........
I agree with you mathematically, but it is a majority of people that bothered to vote, not of the population. Unless you make voting mandatory I suppose you will never get a true figure. As Chilcs said above though, to get people to bother to vote for the status quo is different. It is like online reviews. the majority will either bother putting one up if it is crap or if it is really good. not much in the middle.
Yer sums are wrong Neddy as previously pointed out that tiny swing makes it evens. Do you really think that's good enough to determine the future for the country, your children and grandchildren? How will you feel when they ask you which way you voted and why?
Ah now you are talking a different line. I agree there perhaps should be a change when asking for a referendum like other countries do. Must be past by at least so many %. As for compulsory voting that too may be a way forward although Im not so sure myself on that but could be persuaded.
Leave broke electoral rules, if it had been an election, rather than a referendum, the result would've been considered null and void by law.
As I have said before unbeknown to me all of my grandchildren eligible to vote voted out........I did ask them a couple of months ago....as it came up in conversation. I was surprised as the all come in the 18 to 30 bracket.
So has this one, they've been coming up with plans for leaving. If you mean that the result of a referendum has never been reversed by another vote then you are wrong. Edit: and all previous referendums are democratic as they can be reversed by democracy.
Now I'm confused............So as I understand that means we can keep having referendums until we get what we want is that it??
Get what the public wants, yes, and then after to ensure they continue to get what they want. Generally the rule is you don't have them when there's no chance of change. in order to prevent too many most countries have a super majority rule built into their constitution for major referendums(so its a firm decision that won't immediately flip back). but some countries just have loads. The Swiss had 10 last year alone for example. Our electoral system is just very outdated.
Might be ironic that Cameron's decision to offer a referendum to keep his party in power might result in seriously damaging it.
One hope I have from this nonsense is that there maybe a change in election process to allow for a form of PR in national elections and QM in referendums
Here is another example of poor information being put to the public. Bio-degradable Plastic is BAD, worse than normal plastic. It breaks down into micro particles and then doesn’t go anywhere. It is incredible how everyday I hear people talking about Bio-degradable plastic when they don’t know that it’s bad. Not there fault though, it’s the lack of info.
That’s a great image to show people. I just wish it said, “Polluted by humans who are too lazy to dispose of properly or know the value of the single use plastic item, they dumped here.”
