Conservative peer Lord Heseltine has defended his decision to vote for the Lib Dems in the European elections, saying it is a "matter of conscience".

The ex-deputy PM said he would not back the Tories in this week's vote because of its pro-Brexit stance.

This has led to calls that he should be expelled from the party.

Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen said backing another party broke Tory rules.

If that is the case Mr Bridgen, can we expect to see a mass purge of all the Tories who are saying they are supporting Farage? I would have thought the party lost enough councillors in the recent elections without starting to expel more.

The silly old fool has now rightly been suspended for promising to vote for the wishy washies.
He has been at odds with the Tory party for years.

So it is selective who gets thrown out is it? Lots of Tories say they will vote for Farage despite being elected as Tories in the council elections.. Shouldn't they be thrown out because they are breaking the rules. Shouldn't you be expelled as well? People like Cash, Bone and Moggy have also been at odds with the party for years. Time for them to be thrown out as well?

No, as far as I know he is the only senior Tory publicly encouraging Tories to vote for an alternative party, especially one that denounces the referendum result. Every party has it's oddballs he is one of ours.

Really? You are spending too much time reading your book. Wakefield today.

The first 4 people I speak to are all Conservative Party councillors, including the vice chair of the local party. They’ve already voted for the Brexit Party and they all say they’re here to support Nigel Farage.

Breaking the rules or not? Remember: Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen said backing another party broke Tory rules.

It is good they make an example of somebody who has been at odds with the party for years. Hopefully Ken Clark is not far behind. These guys are clearly at odds with the membership as well as the

So in your view, only those who disagree with you should be sanctioned. Very sad.

A political earthquake has shaken Austria, just one week before the EU elections. We update you on the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache, the now ex-leader of the far-right Freedom Party. Strache quit after a secretly-filmed videotape emerged showing him proposing various illicit deals in return for shady investments by a woman posing as a Russian oligarch's niece. Tonight all of the parties Ministers have resigned.

Meanwhile, in the UK, Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage is facing fresh scrutiny over his finances.

    French News this evening.

I'm quite happy to let the party decide who to discipline.

Having trouble sleeping? Is it to do with the looming 'no deal' Brexit?

If you watch sheep, you will often see one suddenly break into a canter and head off across the field for no obvious reason. The rest follow without knowing where they are going. When the leader gets to the other side it will find that it is just grass still, nothing new. Heads down carry on eating the grass as normal. If they had a brain they might ask why they followed this sheep, but being sheep they don't bother.

Just the analogy that steohanocles used in his great tome.. With the Call to the masses : 'We don't have to be sheep...'

LibDems are probably more like headless chickens, flip flopping, unable to decide on anything. :emoticon-0136-giggl

Rather a strange comment considering that the Lib Dems (along with the Greens and SNP) are the ones to have had a clear policy on Brexit right from the beginning, in contrast to the 2 main parties.
