Dunno about that. I know a few Labour supporters who are planning to vote Green, or Lib Dem, because of Labour's equivocation about Europe.
That maybe the case in some parts of the country. It certainly isn't much of a factor in London where I live.
I’ll be upfront and set myself up for the abuse that will come. I’m a paid up member of said party and proud to be so, despite the current mess which horrifies me as much as others on Brexit etc. there is still more for me to continue my support than to keep switching to follow a fashion. It is by no means certain that Johnson will get the nod and I sincerely hope that is the case, there are thousands of reasonable people like me who are not red-neck right wingers and wish for a more centralist role and policies, that is what I tell my local MP and the party chairman as often as I can. There is a real danger that if people like me cannot contribute to this kind of debate because of outright hostility and abuse then this country is in grave peril to which ever mad extreme left or right wing people taking power and really creating the chaos that will ensue. It seems on this board that only left wing views are treated with any respect and I’m just making sure that even if some think I’ve got a peculiar view of things, we only get on as a nation by toleration and decent treatment of others, and these qualities are not just the preserve of the noble left wing point of view.
It's more likely the old industrial towns, still yet to recover from the kicking they received from Margaret Thatcher's government, where Labour are in danger of losing support to far right parties. Brexit and the emergence of the far right is all Maggie's legacy mate.
You shouldn't be embarrassed about your politics mate, this is still a democracy. I think the Tories have an awful lot to answer for, but I'm sure the majority of their supporters are well intentioned. Though it obviously goes without saying that to be Tory, it is necessary to be either very rich, or a bit thick Ps. I quite like John Major, and Ken Clarke
What is so confusing I find is that all my adult life I have been on the right, but now more than ever when I am leaning left, we have IMO someone who I cannot agree with leading the left. Forget the middle too, my arse is too sore to sit on the fence. This I feel is a quandry of a lot of people. EDIT: Neither...unfortunately (I know you said it in jest)
We need more Conservatives like Dominic Grieve, Anna Soubry, Nicky Morgan. I suppose Philip Hammond is even a moderate. You need to take the party back to a more centrist position. That means neutralising ERG MPs and eventually replacing them with Conservatives who would be proud to reconnect with fellow Conservatives with the CD in Germany and in France. It is a big ask but memebers like yourself need to start the ball rolling. If I was in the UK, I would join my local association to get them to select a pro-Remain candidate, one who believes that investment in education is paramount, raising pay for teachers, police, those in the NHS, the emergency services, raising the state pension. It is doable. After all, a country that can afford to send its young men and women off to Afghanistan, Iraq and other "war zones" can afford to do the former. So basically, taking the party to the left and even pinching Labour´s clothing. That is what MacMillan did appartently.
Jacob Rees-Mogg’s new book gets seriously panned by critics: https://www.theguardian.com/politic...k-the-victorians-12-titans-who-forged-britain
Tories found in breach of Human Rights again. They endorse this group’s findings, when they criticise the likes of Russia and North Korea. I won’t hold my breath waiting for them to endorse this report. One rule for them etc......
Interesting new development at the swearing-in of Ukraine's new President Volodymyr Zelensky. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-48330955 He said, "People must come to power who will serve the public" [Good start] Also, "We must become Icelanders in football [obviously they will strive to punch above their sport weight], Israelis in defending our native land [cough, splutter..], Japanese in technology" [Think I'd make that S. Korean, these days Volodymyr]. 'Ukrainians must also become Swiss in our ability to live happily with each other, despite any differences'. [And so say all of us, matey]. One wonders how long it will take for Russia to be pissed off with him.
Indeed. There was also that UN report that totally blamed Tory austerity policies for the hardship that signifcant numbers of families that suffer unnecessarily. Can I say two things to ordinary people reading this reply? 1] Ask where the money comes from to pay for traditional Tory tax cuts? Somebody has to foot the bill, and 100% of the time it is You. 2] Have longer memories.
Then question facebook's chosen fact checkers. I merely pointed out what they had published about the photo and the associated storyline.
See Ides, this is the problem. The conservatives don;t need more like Grieve, Soubry, Morgan or Hammond. Because there are plenty of them already in Labour and the Lib Dems. The problem with politics (and personal views) these days is that there is an attempt to eradicate any views other than those that are accepted by the middle. An attempt to make the choice only which colour the rosette is with identical policies/ideologies. They are all followers of a "plus ca change" ideology.
