Usually it’s the other way around - lack of discipline, over zealous, hot headed. I don’t recall an occasion where a player matured to become more passionate?
Wasn’t Butcher initially regarded as too placid and Robson and Ferguson had to work on winding him up before games to get him fired up?Not that you would have known it from his England days!!
That early in his career was before my time. Robson and Ferguson were always able to get the best out of the talent at their disposal.
“Passion” - a word used abundantly in football, and often misquoted - is not the issue with Dozzell. Who really wants hot-headed youngsters and professionals throwing themselves around the pitch with little regard for the rules? And when was the last time we had a young player who played like that? Yes, we want players who care for the club. We also need players to show application, discipline, and motivation to do well on the pitch. That’s where truly exceptional footballers are made. We don’t know what Dozzell is like on the training pitch. The fact he is still at the club and in the first team suggests he’s doing something right. However, on the pitch at least, Dozzell showed no motivation, application, or discipline until the last match of the season. The problem is, so did many of the other players.
That, and great mentors on the pitch, such as Mills and Hunter, who must have helped the younger players coming through immeasurably. The last steadying influence at the Club I can recall was de Vos.

If we sell Dozzell I despair. Why would u want to sell your brightest, young, passing attacking midfielder? Their gold dust. We don’t have anyone else as good and I’m fed up seeing our best young players leave...if we dont have to sell him then don’t. We’re not going to buy anyone better are we with our owner...?

I’m sure when some of these players move on and do well elsewhere we will all be sorry - to sell him to one of our main promotion rivals would be barking mad. We all know how that would go. Sunderland and Pompey were as good as auto promotion and both will strengthen, its going to be a really tough ask to do any better than a play off spot.
In an ideal world it would free up wages for PL to bring in a player of his choosing, but we all know ME’s mind doesn’t always work like that!
We need numbers in attack so letting Harrison or Jackson go would be daft. We should really only be selling midfielders now.
It would only be daft to let them go if they were actually successful doing their job of scoring goals, they clearly are useless as strikers so get rid and replace with proven goal scorers.
