Hello, crew. Hope everyone well.

Who was the darned fool who came on here speculating about whether or not GREAT BEAR’s next race after his Haydock novice heat would be in The Derby on 1 June?!? I see instead the race in question is an 11.5 furlong novice Stakes at Bath. Given his breeding (dam won the Irish Oaks and she is also a sister to Nathaniel) I think it’s safe to say that Great Bear is the best bred individual to set foot on the Bath turf since I squired the Honourable Lavinia through the turnstiles their back in the summer of ’07. A Bath £8,550 event (6.55) is a long way from our premier classic but I would expect Great Bear to get his career back on track with a win of the morrow. After that??? The stable won the ’17 ‘King George V Handicap’ at the Royal meeting so possibly he could be steered towards that heat. Although such a scenario would, of course, be dependent on the opening perch he receives from the handicapper following tomorrow’s run.

And I’ll also nominate one at God’s own racecourse, Newton Abbot. PRESS GANG (4.25) has got a very uninspiring formline over timber of -7798 but as a result gets into this handicap on a perch of just 96, I say 96. Given that he ran on the Flat, last month off 68 (has been as high as 72) you would imagine this NH figure would give old boy Harry Fry something to exploit and you would have to imagine he could, perhaps, be the sort to run up a sequence from such a low base figure. Goes, in this event, a quarter of a mile further than he has gone before and it would be hoped that this would help bring about improvement.

Johnny Kidd for me in that Bath race, was eyecatching on debut and this isn’t a great race. Backed him last night EW
 
Fujaira Prince 1.50 York. Nothing original about that but won well enough at Doncaster to be worth a bet at around 7/2
 
Looking at the 2 horse I put up yesterday afternoon Great Bear is pretty much where I expected him to be in the market but must say that I think The Press Gang is very big at 12/1 and with 16 runners each-way has to be the way forward, methinks.

Meanwhile, the big stat of the day concerns the card commencer at York (1.50). In the past 10 runnings just 1 horse drawn 1,2, 3, 4 or 5 has won. This year those stalls account for the first 2 faves and 4 out of the first 7 in the market. Will that stat continue?!? Time will tell…
 
In other news has anyone noted that Lieutenant Henderson has won with his last 6 runners! What an inspiration and shining star he is in our sport, people. In form like this I’m sure he will go onto prove HIS title is only lent.

He won’t keep that record up as his next up are 2 runners in the card commencer at Newton Abbot (2.10). Unless, of course, they dead-heat. What, what, what?!?

His bumper winner yesterday was really taking, seemed very straightforward and has an engine. One for mares novice hurdles.

Another one of his winners was the Rich Richtea owned Pailxandre by 18 lengths (albeit when an opponent came down on the flat after the last)! He’s in the sales next week (Palixandre not Rich Richtea) but wonder now, after that win, if that appointment will remain.

Re his Bumper horses am surprised that the Stick Boy hasn’t been on tipping the combination of The Lieutenant and The Queen in the ‘lucky last’ at God’s own racecourse. Where is the old scout?!?

He’s probably out swinging a bit of metal around his head and trying to hit a little ball with it.

Either that or he’s hunting down the 7lb claimer who gave his pick yesterday a horrid ride, and the horse came back lame, with a cut and minus a shoe. Hopefully he will recover (the horse, not stick).

A flop at 1/3 Fav last time, Space Blues is dropped to 7F for his Handicap debut. Despite being turned over by a Roger Varian horse last time, Space Blues was 5 lengths clear of the 3rd. On both starts this season, Space Blues has looked as if he didn't stay, which seems a bit puzzling given that he looked to stay well over a mile at Nottingham on his sole start when winning at Nottingham last year. From a mark of 93, Space Blues would have been odds-on had he come here on his seasonal debut so I feel he is worth one more chance at odds of 7/2 today. The Derby aspirations are long gone but I'll be with him off top weight today.

In the Musidora I will stick with Sparkle Roll. Frankellina is the sexy option for William Haggas after winning her only start. She missed her last engagement due to softer going and is unexposed but Sparkle Roll did well last time giving 7 lbs to her field despite not letting herself down fully. I expect her to come on but have done my dough at 25/1 for the Oaks after John Gosden said they see her as more of a Ribblesdale filly at this stage. The stable already has a couple oof decent candidates for Epsom so it would take something special to change their mind. Entitle needs to improve a lot from last season while Sand Share was 3rd in the May Hill but that was a race that didn't work out very well and neither did her 4th place in a Group 3 in France. Ralph Beckett hasn't been hitting the back of the net with his 3YO fillies this season, so I'll take Sparkle Roll to hopefully gallop her way to victory.
