So before a season starts you want to be in the CL but mysteriously if you happen to win the EL that's suddenly the better outcome. You wouldn't dare argue the same point if you had been relegated to the Championship. Being relegated to the European second division is no different. Being best of the rest can't be equated with competing at the top level even if you get a trophy for it

 

Yeah right, because being relegated from the PL is now the same as winning the Europa league.

Well as much as I'd love to get to the CL final, I think I'd be gutted to lose it ... contrast watching us lift the Europa trophy and a night of celebrating in a major European city? ...admittedly I'd likely prefer it wasn't Baku

... but then I'm old enough to remember the European Cup, Cup Winners Cup and Fairs Cup in their old guise, when they were all prestigious trophies to win ... even Spurs won one

 

Mate ... with all due respect ... what the **** would you know about that?

We won League One, Championship and Premier League titles in the space of 8 years ... we weren't under any illusions about the relative merits of the first two in the grand scale ... although they were very positive experiences ...

If you look at the winners of the EL in the last 10 years they tend to be better teams than much of the cannon fodder in the CL group stages ... the role call of teams that have won it is quite impressive... it's not the CL true ... but for me it's worthy of its' own merit ... particularly if you win it

 

I was a Spurs supporter when we were in the old second division.
As I keep saying it is a worthy competition for the also rans. I don't think anyone who has won it has gone on to win the CL the following year.

 

Also look at the difference between qualifying for the CL and EL this year. 1 point. It’s hardly a gulf. Fine margins which could have gone ether way tbh.

 

The Europa League IS the European second division. Every team in it has had the opportunity to qualify to play in the top division and failed. You even get promoted if you win it. The parallel is exact.
