Indeed. Can you imagine an Arsenal manager surviving if he went public with "let's come fifth in the PL so we get a chance to win the EL. I would rather do that than risk losing in the CL." Going for glory in the top competition and failing is much better than settling for the mediocre.

Being in the CL is better than winning the EL just as being in the PL is better than winning the Championship.

The whole point is that if you are in the EL then you have zero chance of winning the CL because you can't be in both. You've been missing the narrative from the beginning.
