Very sad to hear this news today.

I know they've been a bit of a bogey club for us - Clint's goal that never was and a pasting on our debut in the PL - but the fans are just like us. Passionate for their club but tossed around like a discarded play thing of a spoilt child.

I wish the fans well and hope they can turn this around eventually.

There is also a definite element of, 'There but for the grace of God, go I'.

It's sad for the fans, but it's also a case of karma - didn't the ex-Chairman propose that the Premier League become a closed shop with no relegation?

It's also the people behind the scenes that lose their jobs I also feel sorry for. I believe that the players get paid anyway. It must also indicate that surely the fit and proper owners tests that the football league / fa give to owners and potential owners are reviewed and revised.

why do the EFL have to stick the boot in by giving them a 12 points deduction? That could be the death nail to this famous English club

Completely agree. Never understood that. Same as someone a bit short of cash, goes overdrawn and the bank immediately makes it worse with extra charges. Madness. No helping hand or sympathy.

It was bought in a few years ago as as a deterrent, some clubs were using administration to clear their debts and some creditors were not receiving all their money.

It now makes Bolton an awful lot cheaper to buy, watch Bassini suddenly have the funds. He’s been hoping for this outcome, although it does open the door for other potential investors.

Unfortunately, yes, as ever, it’s the supporters that suffer.

Sorry but clubs know the rules etc
Remember we are QPR the worse example of poor club management in recent years

    No excuses imo

If a club is run poorly and then in combination the team is also poor what does anyone think the outcome will be? Sick of listening that things aren’t fair ... it’s called responsibility... ignore that then you get what you deserve.

The championship will only get tougher as the standards filter down from the premiership... yes money has maybe ruined it but the game is now the strongest anyway in the world ... the U.K. can’t have both plus the standard has helped English players up to the required standards

There will be plenty more clubs in **** street soon

Time for them to wake up you need £200m to build a team to get to the promised land now

What I don’t understand is why they didn’t drop it into administration as soon as they knew they were effectively relegated this season. I believe the point deduction would have applied this season that way. Strange, as it seems administration was a fairly obvious and inevitable outcome really.

I think the Italian sounding nutter convinced the EFL he was genuine (this time).....If it sounds too good to be true it almost certainly is

To add to their woes and those of Bury. Points deductions or expulsion from the EFL could be the end result...

I know that the FA has the ability to charge anybody involved with football for bringing the game into disrepute etc., but I have no idea whether it, or the PL, or the EFL, or Uncle Tom Cobbley have any additional powers?

Perhaps its time for a proper regulatory authority structure such as you have in the legal sector? Like others have said, its the fans that you have to feel for as they're the one's that will ultimately suffer as they see their beloved club plummet, perhaps out of existence.

If it's not already there, I'd like to see a requirement that each club appoints compliance officers that are legally responsible and accountable to a football regulator, which has the power to investigate and levy fines and other punishments directly on them as well as the club. Give them protected whistle-blower status, require them to report certain pieces of information to the regulator on (say) a quarterly basis, subject them/the club to periodic spot checks and you'd pretty soon dramatically reduce all of this mismanagement malarkey.

The other thing that needs to be done - which for me is a real no-brainer - is prevent owners sticking in debt capital rather than equity into their clubs. How they should be allowed to have first dibs of the cash from a failing concern as a priority creditor is beyond me. If they want the cash out, then there are robust rules in company law concerning distributable reserves before dividends can be paid, or capital bought back.

Clubs should get smarter on player contracts too, supported by the governing bodies etc. Why a player's wages should remain unreduced on a club's relegation is ludicrous. Provision should be written into every contract for such things, with the quid pro quo being something like every player's remaining term on their contract reducing to 12 months (or something).

And whilst we're at it (I'm on a roll), I'd stop clubs loaning players to clubs in the same division as this adversely impacts proper competition, i.e. these clauses that prevent players playing against their parent clubs. I'd also limit the number of squad players for each club for a season to (something like) 30 players. I'd also cascade that down to their reserves and development squads too. Why should the rich PL clubs hoover up all the talent and have the poor relations bring them on for them?

I'm still going... if a player over the age of (say) 23 has made fewer than (say) 10 starts over two seasons (injuries aside) then their contracts should be voided and they should be allowed to leave on a free.

All largely ill-thought out and in need of work, but this kinda bollocks could revolutionise footie.

Oh, can we get rid of that spitting Scouse twat, Carragher too?

    Some great points Uber

I certainly believe that there will need to be some radical changes made unless the authorities / clubs / fans are willing to accept more casualties (ie clubs going out of business) in future

The level of expenditure simply isn't sustainable across the league pyramid, particularly the level of staff wages

Tighter regulation is an absolute must, but this needs to be effectively and transparently enforced by an independent body (maybe OffFoot in the same vein as Offcom or Offwat)

The current authorities could do with entering into a proper consultation process with all interested parties (fans, players, clubs etc) to proactively work out some effective solutions

Very sensible. Who pays for the regulatory structure? I doubt the owners who want to avoid regulation will sign up for it.

It’s sad that these clubs could die, but I’m sure they will rise again as Phoenix clubs and might even be back at the top of the tree one day as the whole unsustainable structure collapses. We don’t need to revolutionise football, we just need to take a massive percentage of the money out of it, return it to the seventies, take most of it off the telly. It won’t be ‘successful’ according to modern viewing and income generation metrics, but it will be football not a ****ing dodgy industry.

I'd imagine all clubs pay for the FA etc. already by way of annual subscriptions or suchlike, so not a huge hardship to lose a few ancient inmates of those bodies and replace with a regulatory authority.

Actually, if the whole of the Football League signed up to something akin to this, it wouldn't matter if those in the promised land of the Premier League chose not to, as access to the lower tiers as an incubator for their rising hopefuls would be greatly restricted to where it is today. Relegated clubs from the PL would have to sign up in order to play in the Championship, so sooner or later many of the PL clubs would end up adhering to the rules. If the PL chose to become a closed shop and end relegation in protest, I think that'd sound the death knell of that league.

That is not correct - a manager who knows what he is doing and is given a free hand to do what he does best will get a team up in a ridiculously overhyped League such as the Championship -some one like Warnock. Bet Guardiola wouldn't have got us up all those years ago working to the budget that Warnock had.

Bury now on their final notice before being kicked out of the EFL but what is the difference between them and Macclesfield who today parted company with Sol Campbell who hasn't been paid for 4 months? Macca appear to be another financial basket-case yet they are apparently ok to continue their fixtures, the EFL really aren't fit for purpose...

And further to this Bury owner Steve Dale has apparently been involved in 20 companies that have been dissolved, does that make him fit & proper? How fit & proper are the EFL allowing someone with this record to own a club? And yet they slaughter clubs with FFP penalties, you really couldn't make it up...
