Expected goals is a made up stat by some statistician about how many goals a team is expected to score based upon factors like where the shots from, is it a header or a kick etc.

Basically rolled out by @astro to say how many quality chances liverpool had against barca and how the scoreline was unfair.

Long story short messis great at finishing and liverpool are *****s in front of goal

tbh it wasn't on the barca thread but instead quoted on quite a few match threads.

I just thought that if it's constantly being used to show the actual scoreline was not as expected, then perhaps someone would realise it's not the scoreline but the "expected goals" which is a load of bollox. Football outcomes aren't a predictable mathematical equation ffs.

    SAM I think...

SAM is a robot that analyses everything in a game and producing some crazy scoreline.

Or is SAM the one that predicts scores before a ball has been kicked.

Either way SAM is a twat.

    Save it for Sunday.

I’d really like them to win it to witness the carnage but will reluctantly join in the laughter should it not happen.

Got to say I agree with you here. No reason for Barca to play their A team at Anfield.

Should commentary on a game be limited to just a statement of what the scoreline was then?

Not allowed to mention chances that were created? Or you are allowed to talk about chances but not how many there were, because once it's in the form of a number it instantly becomes a "load of bollox"?

You're going to come from 4-0 down at half time to draw?

I don't recall you doing that to be honest. 3-0 and draw 3-3 to then win on penalties I'll grant you.

Newcastle 0 - 4 Arsenal though. Now that was a comeback.

Tottenham 3 - 0 Man Utd. Was amazingly run-of-the-mill in the way they won the second half 5-0 to win 5-3.

Anyway, my main point really is that there's tons of comebacks, they're great to see but they're not that unique. You only need to see the Roma games against Barca last year for instance.

You know that's not what I'm saying.

We all discuss events during and after a match including chances created, possession etc, but I don't see how it can be used to spell out expected goals on the following match as that's not how sport works.

We make predictions before a match. For example, I say tonight the score will be 2-1 to Liverpool. I might just base that on recent form for both teams, how they're set up, players missing etc. But if it ends up being 2-2 or 3-1 to Barca and I turn around and say NO! That's wrong because I expected it to be 2-1 so there must be something wrong with the result - then you'd be entitled to think I was being a tad delusional and you'd be right.

As someone who worked in Liverpool from 2007 onwards I can confirm that at the very minimum there must have been 250,000 Liverpool fans in that stadium and none of them left at half time and none of them broke any laws in Turkey.
