Is what Roots Hall is to Priestfield. Southend is a mere 13 miles from Gillingham as the crow flies but by car it is a staggering 47 miles from Priestfield to Roots hall, over 3.5 times the distance!! Are there any other grounds that are so near yet so far?
I can name a few that are quite a lot nearer than Southend - e.g. Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, QPR, & Tottenham. They may be closer geographically, but all the time they're in the EPL it's difficult to believe that I will ever see the journey's end.
I was thinking of going Tuesday but it's not just the distant, albeit this is one of our closer opponents this season. It's the cost and the fact it is a Tuesday night, games like this away would be better for me personally on a Saturday, however, in regards to cost, it just starts crippling you, we've just had two consecutive home games. Even being a season ticket holder, there is additional costs involved in the day, even forgetting the booze! Then Southend, £19 per adult, then add on the travel costs, if I don't want to take my own car, I think I saw it was £27 per person to go on the coach, is that right? If so, for the complete round trip on a coach, WITHOUT match day magazine, food or booze, costs £92 for two adults? Sorry but for this one, I will be going to get my money's worth out of my Gills Player subscription, therefore making a personal saving of £46.
I think you'll find the coach is £16' By the way - I didn't realise you're only a part time fan. I'll be at Southend, as ever for more misery ! ( damned my username )
I'm not saying I can afford every game - I reduce my spending on other vices to do so - so less drinking, (no smoking) & fewer women !
I manage every league home game, that is good enough for me (and the FA Cup), if I can fit in a few away league games during a season then that is even better. Bearing in mind I'm also paying out my subscription for Gills Player. The problem is, it is not just solely about the cost but balancing the harmony at home, which also I have to consider if I take the family car. When I was a young lad it was different, I could go to every single game home and away, however, when you have a family life you have to take in consideration other commitments. Sorry as for the drinking and smoking, there are some vices in life that have to be had everyone to their own, I understand what your saying.
