A couple of runs back I commented that winner Matterhorn might not looked out of place in the Winter Derby, where he held an entry. They kept their sights lower with him and he went to a Listed race at Kempton where he was a shade of odds-on. I didn't back him and it was just as well because he went off like a scalded cat and burned out, running to a 27 lb lower mark than his previous race. Based on that run it was hard to fancy Matterhorn today but he went out there and handed Wissahickon his arse on a silver salver. It could only be Mark Johnston really. The theory was that the jockey got the pacing wrong on the poor run but how can a jockey like Joe Fanning, who knows the horse well, get it so badly wrong? It seems akin to a brain surgeon suddenly taking a claw hammer into theatre instead of a scalpel. I think it was Timeform who made waves about Wissahickon being Group 1 material after he won the Cambridgeshire in grand style. That didn't look the case today.
Just the jolly too good. How many horses will have won repeat renewals on such different going! Fair play to The Daley Express.
Did you watch the first race there today Nass? RP comment that Michaels horse was probably flattered by his run the last day were completely shot down in flames. Looks like he has a nice sprinter there to target some decent races with.
Yeah he was impressive but look at the horse who finished second. It was one of those races that revolved around two and only one ran a race. Interestingly the jolly was down at the posy for 20 minutes before the race, so perhaps the horse wasn’t at its best by the time the others joined it.
Yeah so do I.. the fare showed up today was alright but it's nowhere near the excitement levels and spectacle of the jumps..
