I don't think it is actually ('sad reflection of our times'). It's an annual list of people deemed to have influenced the world in a good way. I didn't study the others on this year's list but with regard to Salah, he's changing images (for some at least) of what it is to be a Muslim and asking for equality for women within his culture. I'd say that's pretty influential.

 

I take your point, but the list also includes Taylor Swift and Dwayne Johnson. I'm afraid I call that shallow and facile. They may have some influence, but there are people with far more influence on humanity who are just not in the limelight. We live in a world that seemingly can't see beyond so-called celebrities when looking for value.
There's more to the world than entertainment.
Of course, this is Time Magazine - the worthy organ that chose Adolf Hitler as its Man of the Year in 1938.

America regularly confuses the 'world' with the USA e.g. the world series. What influences their country is deemed to have influenced the world at large so I get your point very well. As I said I have no comments on the others on the list but thought Salah's inclusion was actually a positive.

 

To be fair: man of the year isn't about who is the best person, or who they agree with the most. Not everyone on the list is a good guy. Hitler was on the verge of altering history in 1938. So probably a legitimate choice for the zeitgeist of 1938.
