There is no official figures that I can find, but an estimate of 1 million WWII veterans world wide seems a fair guess, and half of those are from the USA. Taking all the allies into account the number from the UK is now very small.
I used to have a rep come into my drawing office in the 1960's who had been in a Japanese POW camp, and when he got out weighed under five stone. He had nothing good to say about that country, yet here we are today trying to patch up the damage that Brexit is doing to the economic relationship that we have with them. Once again they are saying that the UK for them was the gateway into Europe. Seeing how much investment that has come via them, it is alarming to hear them talking in the past tense now.

There are times when you have to draw a line Frenchie. If people can still hold a grudge against the Germans or the Japanese after all this time, even though we're talking about completely different generations, then, by the same token, many in places like Malaysia, Kenya or Cyprus can, legitimately hold a grudge against the British. Or many others can hold a grudge against the USA as a result of events which are far more recent. We happily take the moral high ground and say that eg. the Serbs and the Croats should have forgotten the past and learned to live together yet can't do it ourselves.

My late father-in- law was an economist who served in the second world war. He was in Europe for two years after the ceasefire, and made friends of some from the previous enemy who he continued to correspond with for the years up to his death. He understood that there was a linkage between economic well being and peace, and was a passionate supporter of the European countries working together rather than trying to out do each other. We currently see the USA saying that the UK will be ripe for plucking as their economy is huge compared to the UK. This is not the working together model at all, but economic muscle imposing itself on a small country. The small countries in the EU might struggle economically in some ways, but they have equal voting rights as the largest countries. A far better model to ensure peace, than domination by a country such as the USA.

I hope we can draw a line on inflammatory postings about France and her people in the light of the national tragedy.

    A terrible accident...

Hopefully it is an accident. As you all know I have no truck with what goes on in those buildings but I fully sympathise with all who are upset - working within architecture I am too - but it is a world disaster, not only for France. We would be horrified if it were Westminster Abbey or St. Pauls and rightly so.

No tangible connection even though you seek to make one.

    A tragedy...

You appear to be going out of your way to appear as nasty a little man as possible SH. Your so called humour is misplaced here and all you are doing is making yourself appear even more childish and pathetic than usual.

Nigel Farage's new Brexit party is now leading the polls in the forthcoming European elections. Let's hope he makes the waves in the European Parliament Rees Mogg promised. He certainly knows how to raise interest with the U.K. electorate.

SH is right to some degree, but seems very confused. He is a party member, but seems to be rejoicing that their 15% is the lowest ever recorded in a poll for them. Maybe he should ask for his money back, and give it to Farage. I doubt that he will make waves at the EU if elected as he is never there.

Thanks for confirming the latest poll figures. Eurosceptic parties look set to be the main parties in the European elections from the U.K. and France. Can we add Italy and quite a few more EU member states.? Brussels must be very worried that their United States of Europe aim is being increasingly rejected by those able to vote.

Lots of Tories will vote for Nige's party in the European elections so he can cause havoc. They will then revert to vote Conservative if and when there is a GE. It is called tactical voting.

Can someone tell me why this post is allowed to stand? I think it is in very poor taste and offensive and we must not allow our message board to fall to the standard of the lowest common denominator....

I wonder if the latest walking holiday in Wales will prompt the PM to call the whole thing off rather than face the humiliation of losing everything. She might go, but there is no way that anyone can get this through the Commons, unless of course they use our money to give the DUP an even larger bung.
