Not sure if this is just a typing issue, but I think you mean the 1955-56 season, as in the 53-54 season we finished 10th in Division 2, and in the 54-55 season we finished 4th in division 2, with the 3 teams ahead of us, all finishing on 54 points, 1 more point than we achieved. Going into the 55-56 season, we were on 44 points with 4 games to go, together with Bristol Rover and Notts Forest. Sheff Wed were top on 51 points, Blackburn were on 43, and Liverpool and Leicester were on 42. With one game to go Sheff Wed had already been confirmed Champions on 54 points, and we were second on 50 points, with both Liverpool and Bristol Rovers on 48 points, and thus a point in the final game would get us promoted. As it happened both Liverpool and Bristol R both lost their last game, so we ended up being 4 points clear in second place. That result also happens to be our best away win at Hull, although I believe John Charles only scored two goals (one being a penalty), the other two goals were scored by Harold Brook. Our final 4 games that season were away to Doncaster which we won 2-1 with goals from Charles and Nightingale, home to Bristol Rovers which again was another 2-1 victory with goals from Charles and Overfield, followed by the 2-0 victory against Rotherham with Overfield scoring both and then onto the final game against Hull, in which we required to get at least a draw to guarantee promotion. As an aside if it had been 3 points for a win in those days, the Sheff Wed would have won the league on 76 points, and we would have been second on 75 points, if only that was sufficient for promotion these days
Sounds good to me, providing of course he wants to stay. The fans did a good job on Saturday shouting Marcelo Bielsa Marcelo Bielsa, more of this on Friday please. Nothing is better than feeling wanted
I was purely going from memory so I think I am allowed a mistake here and there are you sure Overfield got 2 at Rotherham I could have sworn it was Nightingale Incidentally when Leeds were 8th my uncle said to me if they get promotion I will buy you a season ticket and he did
No problem Leeds60, I wasn't having a go at all, I just knew we weren't promoted in 54 My error in respect of the Rotherham game, as it was Nightinglae who scored both goals, I think I had Overfield on my mind as I was typing, as he had scored in the game against Bristol Rovers, as well as John Charles
Just goes to show I still have a memory.Incidentally Overfield scored the last goal at ER in the 2 division and the first goal at home against Everton in the firstI think that was it!
The goal against Everton was the only one he scored in the league that season, it was also the very first goal scored by any player in the league that day as he scored after 2 1/2 minutes
Out the names you mentioned, I'd give Cibicki and Ideguchi a chance. Cibicki wants to follow the same footsteps as Klich, and who knows if he can bring a similar impact to team. Ideguchi hasn't had a chance to prove himself yet, Orta sent him straight out on loan. Ideguchi will bring a lot of impact just by his enthusiasm alone, and stories were, he's a little dynamo in midfield before he was loaned out, then injured. Whelan, while I think he's right on the other players, should stick to yelling "get in" and that's it. I think he plays on his past association with Leeds United, but he didn't shine as a star. I'd give Pablo a new 2 year contract. 1 season in prem, then a year as a big impact off bench, a second half or 75% of game with the halftime break in between. He certainly deserves that opportunity, and his head, along with his experience and skills are what we need in prem. Is it Friday yet.
I read this in an article not so long ago, Bielsa's brother goes on to say that Bielsa has never broken a contract, a couple of previous clubs are the ones who broke the contracts. https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2019/04/15/marcelo-bielsas-brother-comments-on-his-leeds-united-future/
