Looking for Lewis & Clark is a choon, not sure if it is on this album though. The Long Ryders often get overlooked but maybe it is because of so many other post-punk New Wave bands that came out around the same time. They never got MTV friendly in the same way that The Cars or Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers did but they were certainly influencers for bands who came later, particularly the college rock and grunge bands. Back together and gigging over here this month but sadly I won't be able to make any of their UK shows.
'Looking For Lewis And Clark' is on State Of Our Union which is still in transit. I agree with the comparison to Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers; the thread from The Byrds through Tom Petty to modern day 'Americana' (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, Golden Smog, Son Volt, The Jayhawks) is clear. I only became aware of The Long Ryders through Amazon's "If you like this you'll like ........ " sales pitch. Their 'sound' reminds me of The Flaming Groovies. The Cars, of whom I am also a fan, would certainly fall into the post-punk New Wave umbrella. Unfortunately all the UK Tour dates seem to be in the South so attendance impossible.
I helped out a guy who was determined to be in a band, he headhunted a bunch of us to do a demo but we never got past a couple of rehearsals as it was clear he couldn't hold a tune in a bucket. He did a couple of mixed tapes of the sort of music he was into and The Long Ryders was on it, funnily enough so were the Flaming Groovies. It's a small world eh?!
I am not that guy however I too cannot "hold a tune in a bucket". This does not however stop me from howling and wailing while bourboned up with my iPod Classic ear buds stuck in my lugs while weaving down the boulevards of Paris and 'Strasses' of Koln, Munchen and Nurnberg! Nae shame when pished oot 'o ma bonce!
If only, I've also got to miss out on Monster Truck which is an even bigger pisser as I'd got the ticket already. Anybody want a ticket to go and see Monster Truck in Camden on the 27th April? Will consider anything from face value to pictures of your wife getting pumped.
Received 'State Of Our Union' this morning; the neighbours are currently loving Looking For Lewis And Clark!
If I was stranded on a desert island these would be five albums I'd have take with me to stop insanity, oh and volleyball as well as a fishing rod. I like my music dark and dirty. Nirvana-Nermind( bit obvious) Radiohead-OK Computer PJ Harvey-Stories from the City/Stories from the Sea(bloody brilliant) The Verve-Urban Hymes Sex Pistols-Never Mind the Bolix
Utter banal drivel by the most overhyped ****es imaginable. Muzak for shopping malls with escalators.
I always thought The Beatles were a bit overatted, don't get me wrong they have made some great records and Lennon was brilliant but there are better British bands that dont get the same recognition
So what? It's just that The Beatles nursery rhyme style plastic pop appealed to the brain dead adolescents. The likes of The Who and The Kinks, for example were far better musically and lyrically. The only talented one in The Beatles was Harrison and Lennon and McCartney let him do next to nothing songwriting wise because he would have shown them up for the utter **** songwriters they were.
