The abuse Troy Deeney has got from a certain sections of Wolves "fans" this week on Facebook has been unbelievable. I've lost count of the number of monkey comments and monkey pictures posted on Watford fan sites. Here's the thing though - every ****ing one without exception has been from Mexican posters
I love it when players join in the banter with the crowd - he did it well that day. I assume you mean Gomez rather than Foster? Yeah he can be a bit of a strange one at times.
Gomez. Acted like a twat. Deeney did the banter on radio before the game, showed his quality when he came on, bantered with the crowd and did the rounds after the game. I really ****ing hope you somehow beat them in the final.
Proper example of a guy who came all the way through non league ranks - love him to bits. Found out today I am guaranteed a ticket 49 years of age later in the year and feeling like a kid on Christmas Eve. I'll probably get a mouldy orange instead of Scalextric but it's feeling good for now!
On the topic of racism... I saw the news yesterday regarding a song by Chelsea fans, although i say song more loosely a few words strung together. Those words being idenitified as racist, 'Salah is a bomber' - Now when i first heard/read this news, I didn't understand it or more so what it was reference too. Now maybe i'm just getting old and naive, but after a bit more research i found that Salah is a muslim. I had never ever made any connection with his beliefs or what his beliefs even were. To be perfectly honest, my first thought regarding the term 'bomber' excluding the player name, was i'm sure there used to be a player in the past called 'bomber' - in my head the term back then was used to reference a great or good player. So i looked into this further and remembered my thoughts were related to 'Der Bomber' - Gerd Muller who played for the German team in 1974 World Cup Final and scored the winninig goal (also 1970 team); There was even one youtbube vid that featured his nickname; It makes me wonder if Gerd Muller was profilic today if the term would now be regarded as detriment. Not forgetting back in 1970/74 it was less than 30 years after WW2 (German) if you wished to attach insult rather than respect to it. I hasten to add i'm not lessoning the insult to Salah, but am probably highlighting the tide of change and how words can be construed for other purposes, or is it really much different from the days of the great Gerd Muller (Der Bomber).
Gerd Muller scored the winning goal, in extra time, against England in Mexico on the 1970 World Cup. Broke my 9 year old heart, and ze Germans haf been doing that ever since. Frank Beckenbauer - Der Kaiser - was also in that team. Any top 11 list of the greatest players of all time, has to include those two.
I think what we also need to take into account regarding the players you have mentioned, they didn't get the protection of the officials like they do today. Back in the day the opposition defenders would be absolute butchers, so you had to be able to stay on your feet and be quick. You only had to look to a lessor extent at the English teams, Leeds United and later the old Wimbledon team as way of example. Wasn't there someone in Europe named the 'Butcher of Bilbao'!?
There’s some film somewhere of George Best skipping through about 4 Chelsea players, all apparently intent on scything him down. The pitch was a quagmire too.
It’s what made him and players like Georgie Best amongst the best to ever kick a ball. Best played week in week out against the likes of Harris, Storey, Hunter, Styles, etc. They all used to try to kick seven colours out of him with tackles that would have today’s players rolling around in agony. They never succeeeded Bestie just got up and went at them again - usually making em look foolish as they hacked at thin air. And all this on pitches that were many times no better than ploughed fields.
On the "bomber" theme but from closer to home though roughly same period Tony "Bomber" Brown https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-29936008
