Sunderland host Burton Albion in League One Last time out Sunderland beat Rochdale and Burton beat Barnsley. Sunderland are now third in the table, level on points with Barnsley with two games in hand. A dramatic late winning goal by club captain George Honeyman has put the Wearside club back in a great position to clinch an automatic promotion place. Burton are one of two teams to have beaten Sunderland in the league this season, Albion have scored 11 goals as they chalked up three home wins on the bounce and will be provide a tough test for the Black Cats. Chris Maguire could be in contention for a place on the bench. Aiden McGeady could return after injury. Lyndon Gooch was taken off with a hamstring injury on Saturday and is a major doubt. Jack Ross: "There have been different challenges all season, this was another one, to come from a goal behind. On the back of the week we have had, to keep pushing, it takes guts and hunger." “It is a happy dressing room, they are in a good place and trusting what they do. It was much about character and desire, it was pleasing that they kept faith second half and didn't panic and got their rewards.” “In fairness to Lynden he has played a lot of games, it is always a wee niggle for him,” he said. It’s too early to say right now how long it will be. Tuesday's game comes around quickly, it may stretch us again. We are hopeful that we will have a couple back.” “Aiden was absolutely desperate to play, and he was desperate to travel and be on the bench, We tried again yesterday but he was still feeling it. I have not spoken to him today but hopeful that when we come back on Monday he has a good chance for Tuesday.” “Lee is another one, a bit like Aiden might be back involved on Monday. It just strengthens us as a squad. “I was pleased for Max and Dylan this week, their performances and impact.” Nigel Clough: “Well young man…” "We started brilliantly, got the goal and could have had a penalty when Liam Boyce was booked. We thought it was handball just before that and then Liam went for the second ball and I think nine times out of ten you get those.” "We got the second goal, looked like we were cruising and then there is a penalty against you and we are still not sure what it is for. "Despite one or two decisions going against us today we still got the three points and just about deserved it." "It has been brilliant for the fans and they have seen three very good home games.” "We now go to Sunderland on Tuesday and it will be a big crowd there and they will be absolutely buzzing after winning in the last minute today. "We will see what we have got personnel wise and go from there." Form: Prutton predicts: Meh Match Appointments: Referee: SCOTT OLDHAM Assistant Referees: Duncan Street and David Plowright Fourth Official: Paul Marsden Team Line ups Sunderland: McLaughlan, O’Nien, Baldwin, Flanagan, Hume, Power, McGeouch, Morgan, Wyke, McGeady, Grigg Subs: Ruiter, Oviedo, Dunne, Cattermole, Honeyman, Leadbitter, Sterling Injured: Maguire, Watmore, Matthews, James, Gooch, Cattermole, Maguire Burton Albion: Collins, Brayford, Daniel, McFadzean, Buxton, Allen, Fraser, Harness, Quinn, Akins, Boyce Subs: Bywater, Hutchinson, Wallace, Bradley, Clarke, Fox, Miller Injured: tbc Betting Odds: Home 7/10 Away 18/5 Draw 13/5 My two pence: A fantastic result at Rochdale made even better by Barnsley and Luton both dropping points. As has been said lots on here, we have three home games in a row now - if we win them all, things will be looking very rosy. However, I can say from experience that my team hardly ever do it the easy way My guess is a 2-1 home win. Ha’way the Lads
Whoever Jack starts with we have a decent bench to turn to if things don't go to plan. Have we ever won three on the bounce at home? We never do it easy but fingers crossed for three points tomorrow and I'd settle for 2-0 to the lads.
This is going to be a tough one with Burton on a good run of form, but I expect a hard fought win for the lads and a bouncing SOL.
They lost to Charlton away, but Charlton are good at home, bogey team Burton as well. I cannot understand why we are playing Burton before Fleetwood when the Fleetwood game was called of before the Burton game, i would rather be playing at fleetwood this week and have the Burton game after the Portsmouth game just in case, but who knows. We need to be 3 points ahead of Portsmouth then draw with them on that day we play them, and have 2 games left just in case. 37- 40,000 tomorrow night !
Got that typical Sunderland feeling that just when you start believing that we may actually go up automatically we get hit in the face with an industrial sized cartoon style frying pan!
We need to put to the sword the fact after a couple of good results we go tits up at home Burton are on a very good run and beat us at there ground. I guess we will find out tomorrow who is fit and who isn't. Obviously Mcgeady if fit plays, form player. I would personally play Ovideo. Is Griggs fit? If so Wyke and him with Sterling on the bench, if Grigg unfit then Wyke and Sterling with Kimpokia on bench Otherwise keep team the same
Can't see us losing. Have a feeling fatigue may start to kick in though and we'll have to settle for the draw - Burton aren't a bad side. Wouldn't be a disaster by any stretch of the imagination, and would still put us 2nd with a game in hand. That will do nicely!
Only 27,000 tickets sold so far for this one mate.. I thought it would have been over 30,000 considering the importance of this game..
Not really surprised RAW, lots of games this month so fans will pick and choose I suppose. Expect a bumper gate on Saturday v Coventry as there always seems a bit of spice between us, can't remember why
I can definitely see where you're coming from but that's a previous generation, in all honesty. It won't apply to everybody, of course, but practically everybody under the age of 50 that I've spoken to about it doesn't care. Different team and the guy has now passed away. It's just the oldies who are holding grudges. Which is totally their choice, I'm not having a go.
I really don't buy this idea that Burton are our bogey team, we beat them last season so they can't be. Anyway, it was Walsall a fortnight back and will soon be Portsmouth, it's nonsense imo. Burton are where they are because they're not as good as us, we're at home and should beat them. I can't see anything but a Sunderland win tbh.
These bairns need to be educated into the clubs vendettas, Coventry is one and so is dirty Leeds who broke Bobby Kerrs leg
