It is only a matter of time before we get PR in the UK. As stated previously, if Labour win an election needing Lib Dem support to take office then it is a whole new ball game.

Apart from the regular whinging on here when FPTP produces the wrong result (Tories elected again and again) there is no demand whatsoever from the UK public to change our voting system.

Agreed, a matter of time, at least 50 years.

How are you in a position to judge what the wishes of the UK public are - or are you telepathic on a mass scale ? The majority of the population voted against the Tories - yet they are in office. Can you place your hand on your heart and say that this is a democratic state of affairs ? One thing is absolutely clear - and that is that the British Parliamentary system is failing us at the moment, and a large part of this failure is to do with the inability of politicians to work upon cross party lines.

I am in a position to judge because I show a lot of interest in UK politics and have not detected even the slightest hint of a desire to change our voting system apart from the usual culprits i.e. Greens and Lib Dems. They only complain because their tiny vote share produces even fewer MP's than the alternative. At least our system keeps out the political extremes that frequent the French and German Parliaments.

In contrast to your last sentence our political system forces extremists into the 2 major parties because it is only there that they can have an influence. At least in other countries they are out in the open flying their own flags for all to see.

Not true, certainly until Momentum candidates filter through at the next election. Hopefully former Labour candidates will be challenging these insidious infiltrators.

How would you describe your own position other than as an insidious infiltrator in your own party, when you side with a group of extremist right wing desperadoes who simply want to bend the whole party to its will ? Just face up to it - you know, or care, about as much over democracy as my cats Trotsky and Castro <laugh> The only things you are concerned about are a) that the Tories stay in power by any means possible b) that you and your other right wing nutter friends can bend the party to their will and c) you get a hard Brexit even if it is against the will of either the population or parliament.

Momentum are socialists. The infiltrators were ‘New Labour’.

One charity has reported that it is supplying food to feed 775,000 people every week in the UK. In 2009 there was just a handful of food banks in the country, and today there are more than 2,000. According to the employment figures that some crow about, use of food banks should be dying away, but they are actually increasing year on year. How can this be? The only reason that makes any sense is that this so called work doesn't pay enough to feed yourself. Last year Gove handed out £15M to the food banks and hoped it would cover up the fact that they are picking up the pieces that a proper system of government should be dealing with. Typical attitude these days. Give out a bung, and hope that it keeps everyone quiet. It also shows that the employment figures are not reflecting what life is like for so many people.

  16. Probably explained by the cost of housing. It's astronomical especially, but not only, in the south east.

Almost certainly one factor, but we could have an entire thread on that one subject.

It's a national disgrace that we have the necessity for even one foodbank.

  20. Sorry to bring football onto the politics thread but didn't seem right to put it on the semi Final thread. Why on earth did the FA think it was a good idea to put a plastic flag on all 80,000 seats yesterday. Given the huge moves being made to reduce their use it seemed a bit ridiculous. It's especially bad when you think of all the surveys being run about Premier league clubs and their contributions to a better environment!
