Trivial proof. Trivial is spot on... As I say, no credible proof whatsoever that it’s anything but revenge.
it is. Specifically, that if it financially costs society more to punish such heinous crimes than is materially recovered in the convicted returns to society, then there is a purely financial argument for getting rid. "It goes up against real world applications of the death penalty, which show that it costs more." So a currently "real world" implementation of the solution may be excessively costly (I assume you mean N yrs of incarceration before execution + the execution costs) . But not the ONLY implementation possible. Which returns us to my discussion with hbic ...
Indeed. "As I say, no credible proof whatsoever that it’s anything but revenge." Again ... So you were incapable of understanding a trivial proof. Glad we cleared that up.
There is no argument for the death penalty apart from revenge and your cold blooded financial, assessment of the situation, which is debatable anyway. Using that logic, why don’t we just top all criminals? After all, it’s gotta be cheaper! Even better, we could regress a couple of hundred years and make them big public events, with boards flashing how much, you the taxpayer, is saving by stringing up these people.
Indeed. In fact, there is one entity in existence that could decide exactly that (and in QI mode : in the 1970s a pop artist made a ground-breaking LP based on their vision of a dystopia that included very similar ideas) .
There's definite examples where the death penalty was used as revenge, with the Bentley case being an obvious example in the UK, while in the US at least one juror for the Albert Fish trial said that they agreed with the defence that he shouldn't have faced the death penalty because he was clearly insane - but felt he deserved to die anyway (and trust me, you do not want to look up why they came to that conclusion, as you'll need a couple of gallons of brain bleach and six or seven showers when you see what he was on trial for)
I know it, the case. It’s before my time, but it was talked about a lot when capital punishment was abandoned. It all revolves around ‘let him have it Chris’ which, of course the old bill interpreted as shoot. Bentley was actually in police custody when the copper was shot. So, yes, a prime example of capital punishment being used as a revenge tool.
The most nonsensical thing about the Bentley case is the actual shooter, Christopher Craig, served ten years Well, that and the site of the murder is now a stop on the Croydon tram system...
Seems some people would be quite happy with the murderer locked up while your family member is no longer with you.
Nick's got one big pair of Boles The Robbie Gibb he is referring to was editor for Daily/Sunday Politics, Marr on Sunday and This Week from 2008 until taking his position in Downing Street in 2017 and, prior to that, deputy editor for Newsnight between 2002-8 I'm sure this is not related in any way to Nigel Farage getting such ridiculous prominence during that exact time period...
Gibb, in his elevated position and close pal of Andrew Neil, also had direct editorial influence over R4 Today and BBCQT. Mmmm.... Starting to see a trend here
Add to that Question Time audience selector Alison Fuller Pedley deleting their Facebook after they were caught sharing post from Britain First and other far-right groups, then it becomes obvious why the likes of Billy Mitchell, Jonathan Jennings and - I **** you not - the Boston chapter of the English Defence League are brought to tapings, allowed to mingle with the panelists before filming begins, and are sure to be asked several questions
I liked the banner I saw which read: " Theresa May, Theresa might But Theresa won't 'Cos Theresa's ****e" A frustrated Brexiteer I assume?
