Not for Sunderland... But for my son's team. Sitting top of the league with 1 left to play and need a draw to guarantee the title!! I got nervous on Sunday about SAFC's cup final, but this is next level! Already feeling the nerves for that one! We play Consett at their place on Saturday! (although we can technically win the league on Thursday if the team sitting second fail to win!)
It great following football at this level. My grandson whose 11 have reached their cup final for the second season running against a bigger team from mighty Kendal whilst his team are made up from a tiny village with obviously limited resources. They lost 2-0 in the last five minutes last season and are hoping to reverse that result this time. I just love the commitment from kids at this age.
If he is playing at the main ground with the astro turf then you best warn him to wear the correct footing and that the little black pellets get everywhere.
Nah they knocked it down for the new school. They moved around 2 miles away to a 4G pitch around 5 years ago now maybe?
Oh right. I knew the new school was in that bit of the town but I didn't realise the football ground had gone. I don't go to that bit of Consett much when I'm back in the area. Where's the new football ground then?
It's at the top of Delves Lane - just behind where the old Tesco (now B&M) used to be. It's a good facility. One stand for sitting then you can stand round the rest of the pitch. All the kids teams play and train there and I played in one of the 6 a side leagues on an evening.
Better not be. They cancelled 3 tines due to pitch flooding (we all know it was due to not enough players but can’t prove it. Points should’ve been awarded to us) if it’s 3g there’ll be hell on this weekend as 2 of our main players aren’t available.
They have normal grass pitches round the back if there are multiple matches on at the same time I think.
Nice one - Enjoy it while you can. My lad's team folded last season. After a few years of mid-table struggles they finally got a manager who took it a bit more seriously but still made sure all the team got to play a part and enjoyed playing the game. They were runners up in his first season then won the next League the following season. I used to really enjoy the early starts on Saturday mornings, cheering them on and even running the line. It certainly makes you realise just how hard it is to officiate a game. I'll always remember my lad's 7 minute hat-trick - what a day that was. Good luck on Saturday
Good luck to your son and his team mates. I miss the days of being a kid and playing football on weekends for a team. Bet you’re a proud dad regardless!
It’s been great. He plays up front and is just under 6 foot at 14 and is very quick. Top scorer with 49 last season and another 30 in a higher league this season!
Keep the updates coming, my son is 14, 5'10'', pretty quick, especially with the ball, plays right and left mid, 7 goals in 15 games at Freshman 'A'. Same conference that McBride came from. Though to be fair, I don't know if McBride actually played High School football. I know the school he attended won the state championship a couple years back.
I used to get butterflies before SAFC games (truth be told I used to get the ****s I was that nervous) but the last few years it's ebbed away and only one game has made that happen (cup final at the weekend) recently for SAFC - I get that feeling with his games!! With my son and his team though, we all have a great relationship (parents and kids) and it's a proper team effort - doesn't matter who scores as long as the team do and they celebrate as one with no politics from the club! Beaming with pride - doesn't matter whether they do win the league - they will be promoted again (2 seasons running) and the team is a very well put together and close knit group and I hope they can keep going. Loved every minute of the last 2 seasons - even the one where I got sent off for telling the ref he had no respect for the parents (Spoke to us all like ****e) as we still won the game
If they win the league bring the trophy to the SOL next Tuesday to parade, we need to see one here sooner or later ! at least the girls won on Sunday.
One of my lasting memories of Roker Park was always getting off the bus at the sea front and making my way to the ground across a field between 2 streets of houses. Even on a warmish day I would still feel freezing, and combined with the butterflies, my pre match nerves would be so bad my ribs used to hurt.
You win both then you go second. You could still get automatic promotion. Interesting run to the end of the season. Best of luck to your son too!
