I think your remarks earlier about the current run of form coinciding with Curtis's absence and the question mark of Bogle all relate to my earlier point that Curtis, Lowe and Bogle in the same forward line may not be a good mix because they all rely on a level of unpredictability. There is no doubt that Lowe and Curtis have provided goal this season ( and it is of course impossible to underrate goals!!!) but the three players in combination do not create good structure for retaining possession and this may be at least be part of the reason that Sunderland were able to dominate the first half on Sunday. Winning games on top of a first half like that will be a rarity (although it happened on Sunday!). For the next game I think Evans and Hawkins should start with Curtis and Bogle the impact subs potentially. This should be a line up capable of retaining their share of possession. There is no doubting Curtis's talent and he has been a plus this season. To be fair to him his appearance on Sunday was his first for two or three weeks with limited training in between. As Jackett has said Hawkins has limitations but he also has a presence and his team mates know where he will be. As you say there may be question marks over Bogle having 90 minutes in him. Lowe is the one of these three currently that must be retained. I have wondered after reading reports whether or not Pitman has 90 minutes in his legs but he seemed to prove that he did on Sunday. He appeared to be spent - understandably - for the last period of extra time and I thought he should have been substituted at that time but I think Jackett had in mind his ability from the penalty spot - and he was right.!
I,m staggered that Pompey got their possession up to 63%!!! I think the commentator said it was about 25% at half time.
I'm amazed we had as much as 25% possession at half time, to be honest ! We defended well, but struggled to play the ball out of defence, as Sunderland's attacks on our goal were incessant. Second half and extra time were the complete reverse as we attacked their goal continously, and prevented them from attacking our goal. Kenny's two substitutions of Oli Hawkins for Omar Bogle and Gareth Evans for Ronan Curtis were truly inspired, and to my mind helped us to win the match.
