I agree he can play on but I think he himself will want to return to Ajax. As I said he’ll be 33 when his current deal expires, I’d love to keep him but I just think he’d want to return to the club he adores before it’s too late.
More to the point, if you add one or two per year, it means you don’t have to overhaul with 6/7 new faces in one window, which arguably is what we need to do this summer. Worst case scenario, arguably we could need two GKs, a CB, a RB, two CMs, a winger and a striker. Not all of that can come from the academy even in a best case scenario.
Get real about what? Last summer we were one or two players away from being able to compete with Man City (and Pool). Fast forward to nearly the end of this season and the stale nature of this side has shown a number of frailties and the lack of strengthening last summer has meant we’ve got a huge up hill task going forward.
I think as rcl has alluded too there's a middle ground. Building a stadium is fantastic and will be positive in the long run. This shouldnt be at totally at the cost of the short term where you saw zero investment this year. In truth you needed to do a bit more last summer so that you dont need to make massive overhauls in one go, which isnt a good plan. Missing out on the CL (you are still in pole position) would be massively detrimental.
They’ll likely be losing De Ligt this summer so chances are they won’t sign a good enough replacement unless they pluck another worldy from the academy (which for Ajax, is actually a possibility), so I think there could be a chance that they’d wait another year and try getting Jan on a free.
I’m sure lack of significant funds played a part in it. But I also remember Poch saying that he needed to buy HG players as we were short, but couldn’t find anybody suitable. Yes, we should have paid up and bought Grealish, imo.
Yep, I’ve said exactly this. Too much needs to be done because of the failure last summer to the point where we’re going to be disappointed this summer.
Grealish and Moutinho - two quality players that should be wearing the Spurs shirt but aren't. But we know the usual brinkmanship cost us those two, and possibly a great deal more long term.
Think it through, if you are trying to buy players to build a team to win the PL then there is no middle ground. Pochettino could have bought players but he decided that what was available was not good enough. This argument has been made over and over. Football fans just want there team to win and when it doesn't out go the toys. Wenger said that Spurs would find it difficult when buillding a new stadium and overall we have done pretty well considering. The fairy dust is in the eyes of fans and they lose sight of reality and even worse stop enjoying the football.
Add to that Ajax will likely be flush with cash given they've already received a reported €75m for de Jong and that'll be topped up with de Ligt, Tagliafico, Ziyech and Neres all being strongly linked with departures That's bollocks: the Moutinho deal was scuppered by us agreeing a fee and then Porto remembered there were third-party payments to address - and our response to this was to pay Fulham the £15m release clause for Dembele
I have no doubt if you went and bought the Jack grealishes of the world their would be fans complaining about a lack of world class signings. This is where the club needs to be strong and carry on with your current club policy of buying up and coming youth players ala alli son etc. To not even try to improve at all when their were obvious weaknesses is something that can turn a fanbase though if things go wrong. To be the lowest spenders in the league sums up the situation
