Very happy memories. As dreary as everything seemed back then, we were happy and the music was great. We've somehow lost more than we've gained, despite all the new tech, etc
Very sad news. Even now I find it difficult to believe he was only 4 years older than me when The Beat hit the big time.
I've been away and only caught the briefest news of the shocking loss of Ranking Roger. His work with The Beat was rightly well known and they were the best of the ska bands of the later 80's. Less well known is what he put down with The Clash, before internal argument within the band and much more particularly, with CBS/Columbia radically altered the look of their 5th album. Glyn Johns was called in by the label/Bernie Rhodes to slash the heavily reggae influenced double album 'Rat Patrol from Fort Bragg' down to the unsatisfying US FM-friendly 'Combat Rock'. It split the band up and saw Mick go off to form General Public with Roger and Dave Wakeling. Here's 2 tracks rescued from the bin with Roger front and centre... Roger...a true star.
I think that I have made it clear that 1979 is one of my favourite musical years, here is a small selection of songs that were in the charts in this week in 1979. And that's without me including hits this week in March 79 for The Jam, The Clash, The Buzzcocks, Elvis Costello, Sex Pistols, Squeeze, Kate Bush and Thin Lizzy
Was listening to some Elvis Costello on the flight home last night. Fabulous. New album just released but no tour dates. I hope he's okay after that cancer problem last year.
Went to a fabulous little gig in Ashford last night - The Fay Hallam group - First came across Fay in Makin' Time in the mid 80s played a great selection of songs shame that so few Ashfordians turned up but I loved it
As a venue they call it 'The Revelation' its actually the Parish Church in the centre of town - But its an excellent little venue the sound was excellent
I don't know it, when I'm home I will look it up. If you see a bald fat b'stard 60 years old, with a Spurs tattoo on his right forearm, who can hardly walk, come and have a beer. I take it that the sell beer there.
Yes the beer is good locally brewed 'Curious Brew' very drinkable - hopefully there will be other decent events coming and i will see you there
