So SCP had weaknesses as our manager, he's still in credit as player and a manager who achieved some success. Look at some of the other managers we've had since Curbs, why does SCP get the stick?
I think the flack comes from people holding him in high esteem but then looking at what he has done since. For me he will always be in credit and I could not really give a f*** what he has done/not done since.
Powell forced Roland to fire him. Apologists, toadys and yes-men don't defy their boss at all, never mind to the point where he has to fire them. So Powell is obviously not an apologist.
Koeman- Superb at Soton, failed at Everton. Hodgson- Success at Fulham and Palace, failed at Liverpool Howe- Superb at Bournemouth, failed at Burnley. Shankly- average at Udders, legend at Liverpool.
I don't even think it's a simple reaction against fans who say they would like Powell to come back one day. There are some Charlton fans who would welcome Phil Parkinson back if it ever happened. But Parkinson does not come in for even 1% of the stick that Powell gets. So why do some Charlton fans hold such a low opinion of Chris Powell? Beats me.
Why do fans worship at the altar of Chris Powell? Why do Charlton fans always want to go back. Alan Curbishley was an excellent manager, a class above Powell. Do I want him back? No, I am very happy with Bowyer and Jackson. @lardiman have you ever worked for someone you didn’t respect? Did you carry on working for him? Does that make you an apologist?
I've been fortunate in my working life so far. Only worked for four small companies; 10 years 6 months 21 years 4 years (so far. Hoping to see this one through to retirement) The only employers I found I could not respect were those of my second job. They often paid their staff over a week late every month, using lame excuses like time cards not being punched correctly. When I asked other staff about this they said it had been going on for years. They seemed resigned to accepting it. At the time I needed the money quite badly so I stuck to the job for a few months. But after I'd been paid late the third time I told them I would leave if it did not stop. The following month my pay was late again so I resigned. I explained my reasons to the DHSS and they found in my favour, paying me dole money for 6 weeks until I got my third job. I've never taken a job with a company I already had reason not to respect (prior to joining them). Duchatelet's CAFC certainly falls into that category as far as I'm concerned. I pity the staff who have to work there under his managers. But they need to pay the bills and most of them probably love what the Club used to be, so are hoping to still be there after RD is gone. I don't hold that against them. You seem to have assumed that I said at some time in the past that anybody who works for Duchatelet is an apologist. I don't recall ever making that statement. I believe Royston holds that opinion more than I do. But he does not apply it to Lee Bowyer for reasons that are not clear to me.
@lardiman How do you explain Powell’s managerial record at Huddersfield & Southend ? I’m sure you are aware of the stats which suggest he has done a poor job at both clubs. He’s another Iain Dowie (who also fluked one good season as a manager) in a flat cap.
Who cares how badly Chris Powell has managed other Clubs? Since when did we give a toss about Huddersfield or Southend? The difference between Powell and Dowie is that Dowie was crap at Charlton as well as in his other jobs. Powell delivered a 101 point promotion. On a more serious note; I admit Powell's poor record at other Clubs casts doubt on his ability to recreate the success he had when he was Charlton's manager last time. And I concede that if Lee Bowyer is not our manager next season, it would probably be better for Charlton to employ somebody like Kenny Jackett or Mick McCarthy rather than turn back to Powell. But I am still grateful for what SCP did for us when he was at the Club, and I'm not one of the fans who delights in putting him down at every opportunity. On his record, Powell is our best manager since Curbishley. Lee Bowyer might take that status away from Powell in the future, but he has not done so yet. And Powell never was a Duchatelet stooge. Something that Bowyer cannot claim.
Powell said/knew he was out once we got knocked out of the cup. Bowyer came in to work for the squirrel and Dushitelet.

But Bowyer works for RD. I am confused.
actually Elf it doesn't … the incontinent CEO went before Bowyer was promoted to acting Manager …. but that is just a technicality.
Given that he is only 5'2, nothing about @baraettmattesvensson stacks up. Even when he is standing on a milk crate.
