What do we do with Charlie Wyke... does Grigg play better with another striker... what about the Spuds loanee? Wyke made the pass for Griggs to score, flash in the pan or worth persevering?
That might be the way to go, since we don't have a true #10 playmaker type. I think Ross did too - and he tried it with Wyke, but nothing with Wyke works out quite like you might have hoped. I'd like to see us try again with the kid from Spurs up top with Grigg, especially while Honeyman is out. I like Power, he has placed some nicely weighted balls to our attackers, from his usual position, but once you get to the 18 yard box it's all one touch, give and go, put it in the back of the net - and he didn't take his chance against Barnsley. O9 plays a bit narrow at RB, (probably by design, to capitalize on his aerial capabilities, allowing Leadbitter to sometimes drift out wide to provide the quality cross, or for Catts to venture forward and score goals) this is why I think we can afford (defensively) to substitute a midfielder for a second striker.
I'm also interested in how Wyke played in general, he got a seven in the player ratings which presumably was based on more than one pass to Grigg. Two up top could work if Wyke is going to get his **** together.
In a swirling unreadable wind I’m still astounded at how the hell Leadbitter can pass a ball 60 yards pinpoint!!! He’s ****ing mint!
Wyke is another one who looks better with the ball at his feet. After Wembley we need to go all out for wins and him n Grigg could do well together if we can get McGeady & Morgan or Gooch crossing the ball in low and hard from the wings. Gooch changed the game today imo. His energy and the bottle to make a tackle unlike a few of the others who were thinking of their Wembley places. Even with injuries it is the strength on our bench which is helping enormously. Two upfront is a must until the end of the season imo.
We need that extra man in midfield , his cameo today was a highlight and I am pleased for him, his lay off today intentional or not, won us the game, but I would prefer to keep our current tactics, maybe use the substitutions sooner and introduce one or two new players within the system to spread the load and keep more players involved, but stick to the overall game plan, it ain't pretty but its delivering results, thanks to a very strong bench, a key advantage imo.
I've been critical of Wyke, not without good reason but criticising our players doesn't go down well on here, so I didn't want to bring it up but I'm not sure he meant the pass to Grigg. It looks like he's trying to control it and moves towards it but to his credit he sees Grigg collecting it and gets out the way. That's why I wanted to know how he played generally because if that alone justified a 7/10 and he did nowt else then he hasn't improved imo. Agree with you about sticking to the current plan, it hasn't served us badly at all. Two upfront could work as an option but only if Wyke is up to it. Sterling seems like a dud going off his lack of game time.
I dont think Wyke meant it either but in other moves he did hold the ball up well and bring players into the game.
Fair play then that's what I expected from him, he might not have meant the pass but he still linked up with Grigg. I thought he was going to be a big lump who won every header and physical battle, doesn't seem to be that at all but some of his link up play looks vaguely promising. Still time for him and Grigg to work out a partnership I reckon, especially with Maguire out.
There is a chance Maguire will be OK sooner than expected possibly even the final. If that is the case get him in the team and keep Wyke on the bench.
Gil where have your got this McGuire news from, sounds quite unbelievable to recover from his injury so quickly, great news of true though.
Sterling interests me, we have seen very little of him, so making any judgement one way or another difficult, but the glimpses have been promising enough, and he may prove useful in the heavy programme coming up after the break.
I thought Wyke made the difference when he came on.. Not just his assist for the goal, but his winning of, holding on to and laying off the ball was excellent in my opinion..
