Think it was like a lot of things in Hull. Fads which attract people for a while, especially if there is a bit of success. Too much of the same thing. It was interesting seeing big names like Mauger but the shape of the track meant that who ever hit the first bend in front was liable to stay there.

    Big call from you.

I'm getting top notes of taurine bowel movements on this one.

Let's be diplomatic: I think you have 'misremembered' here.

King's Lynn Crusaders- now there was a team.

Some have more than others. Remember when Hull was the baseball capital of England?

Alas there are zilch Vikings 70s crowd FACTS online.

But it was a summer sport as I recall, usually a Wed night.

I attended for a year or two before common sense kicked in and I realised every lap of every heat of every match was really quite similar.

Everytime some poor fellow crashed and needed medical assistance, there was a shameless rush to get a closer look by all the young kids who ran to the part of the track where it happened.

From memory when I went there used to be 6,000 to 7,000 for a season possibly two.

Their biggest crowd may well have edged some of the lower ones at City in the mid 70s.

Off the top my head from mid 70s, City plus Hull plus Rovers = approx 16,000

They folded due to lack of money.

It was worth going just for the smell, I love the smell of Methanol on a Wednesday night, as they probably nearly said in Apocalypse Now.

I seem to remember decent crowds (8-9,000) the season they "lost" the title to Coventry (1979?) - when Ivan Mauger was the main man. I don't recall seeing home attendances printed but I've read somewhere that the crowd at Coventry's Brandon Stadium for the Saturday night "title decider" was 23,000.

If I remember correctly, Vikings were eventually kicked out of The Boulevard for "alleged" failure to pay bills - although the general consensus was that due to Hull FC's revival and increased gates, the revenue they brought in was no longer needed.

I remember being involved with one of the Hull listings mags ('Radar'?) in the early 90s and we did a piece on baseball in Hull. I seem to recall the league's administrative hub was here and there were about half-a-dozen teams in the city.

Then again, I could've dreamt it. I'm at that age now...

I can remember watching Yorkshire at the Circle in the JPL in the 70s on a Sunday afternoon, usually about 6,000 there.

There was nowt else to do at the time.

Saw a wall plaque at City the other week among the "Tubby and Edna BLAKNWHITE4EVA X' about some old Hull CC larker.

They got a really ****ty outcome from the KC stadium being built, but their real problems started when the wessie dominated YCCC c'ttee decided the Circle wasn't up to it and stopped giving em games each summer.

I was another who went to see the Vikings, getting kicked out of the Boulevard is how I remember it. It certainly wasn't a fad as speedway had been in Hull for years and the late 70's were the peak of the teams success.

Interesting reading, there was a railway line and a specially built platform for spectators at Hedon.

There was a racecourse in Hedon before that also.

My husband lived next to Marfleet Station and as a 10 year old often went by train to Hedon Halt to see the Hull Angels. He says a perfect Saturday for him in those days started by playing school football before heading off to see Raich Carter's Tigers followed by a speedway night at Hedon. Ended with a fish/chip supper from a shop close to his home.

They stopped playing Yorkshire games at the Circle as the decision was taken to play all games at Headingley. Middlesbrough and the other places that got games lost out as well.

    Eh?

Isn't that what I just said in so many words?

I can well understand the high costs in maintaining grounds around the county (Sheffield, Bradford. Middlesborough, Hull etc} but the decision was even easier if it's made by wessie ecky thumpers keen to retain Headingley as a test match venue by upgrading its facilities at the expense of satellite stadia.

Top tip: watch YCCC at Scarbrough in August.

No it wasn't what you said. You only quoted the Circle being stripped of Yorkshire games.
    "
"They got a really ****ty outcome from the KC stadium being built, but their real problems started when the wessie dominated YCCC c'ttee decided the Circle wasn't up to it and stopped giving em games each summer".

It seems fairly obvious they were going to put all their money into Headingley, the best ground and the one with the most potential. Another Wessie ground lost out, a South Yorkshire one and a North Yorkshire one. Test matches were never going to get award to the other ones and other counties didn't use a load of grounds.

No interest in watching cricket, or anything else, at Scarborough.

And the largest and most populous city with the most facilities in that county is?

Which of their cities do Lancashire and Warwickshire play their matches in?

I think you're cutting off your nose to spite your face there.

Yorkshire's premier coast resort and the jewel of the east coast to boot.

Cricket is just one of many attractions on offer there.
