Tragic . Does anyone remember many years ago a father threw his Daughter off the itchen bridge ( Soton ) because he didn’t want her having to grow up in such a cruel world ? Pretty sure it happened and not just my ****ed up grey matter playing tricks again
I saw it happen a few times when I worked in the NHS. Thankfully nobody I worked with killed anybody else, but a few that I was working with took their own lives. Always makes me wonder to this day if there was something I could have done differently.
No mate, probably not. Some people put on a brave face, some go recluse,. I'm guessing 9/10 times, you just don't know.
In my old job some people would threaten to kill themselves, (thankfully) 9/10 times they didn't. But it meant I had to get them sectioned, which means getting the Police, Social worker and Psychiatric nurse involved and it's a ****ing headache. But if it stopped them from killing themselves then it was worth it. Most of the time it was a cry for attention and help though. The ones to look out for were those who had been ruminating on it for a while and had made a plan. Often they would then clam up about it and not speak. I remember going home at night wondering whether I'd be the last person to see those people. Others you had no idea about. One lady I worked with used to work for the BBC as a script writer, very intelligent woman who in her day had a huge social network, wined and dined with celebrities and high brow arty types. Travelled abroad, gave talks and lectures etc. She'd always battled with depression. One day I got a call from the Police to say that she'd thrown herself off a cliff.
Just as with the death penalty debate, there are too many things that could go wrong and result in someone being topped in error. The only way to remove the error is to make it compulsory to top everyone once they hit 70. 55 if they are Tottingham fans.
