You would think that the Pompey public would have more pride in a club with such a glorious history and with some recent success, I mean, how many people were on Southsea common in May 2008?...200,000? And now the bad days have returned they have all deserted the club they supposedly are so passionate about.
"Big" when applied to your football team is impossible to measure, surely? How you perceive your club is all in your head. It's like a little child claiming one fictional hero is "better" than another, or a teenager saying that the Stones were "better" than the Beatles.
Well that's upto you. I'm only answering as I feel I should give you the respect of a reply. I was only listening to a Radio 5 programme the other day where the reporter was talking about some of the better areas of Fratton Park desperately needing some attention. He didn't want to look too hard at the worst areas. Yes, I'm sure FP has plenty of character. I remember character. The Dell had plenty of it. When Saints got on top of the opposition the seated areas upstairs in the East and West stands started stamping their feet, so a sound of thunder would get going and send shivers up the spine. But it also rained on you. It was also cramped, because not only was it small [30,000 unseated/seated] but, in the standing days, the crowds were much bigger than the latter years when they were limited by regulation. I know. I was one of the 31,044 witnessing Law, Best and Charlton in their heyday, playing against Paine, Channon and Davies. And you talk about history..! The Dell was also smelly in places, and cold. And when the second half got underway, you couldn't see the HT scores because some people would obscure them by leaning over the wall [oh, I'm going back in time now..!]. That's character. And it's best left in the memory. Give me character or give me our present stadium and I'll take St Marys every time, for today and for the future.
Time for bed ffd. I don't expect you to sleep well given the spanking that Wet Sham will give you fish fiddlers tomorrow...
They are without doubt... Fish Lips, in all honesty. Used to think it was strange, but with what's out there on the web today, I am more tolerant. As they say, vive la différence!
frattonfunkdaddy Honours are all that matter. All Manure fans are worried about is eclipsing Liverpool's number of titles and European cups. Neither club fans give one jot about attendances. Circumstances have left us with a stadium that can currently hold about 20,000. You have a newish stadium, flatpack and cheap though it is, it will hold up to 32,000. So currently you will always have the bigger attendances. Check your history though and you will see a very different picture. LD, don't give me that Southern League garbage. You can twist it all you like but history does'nt lie and that's the one thing you cannot compete with us on Honours are all that matters yet you dismiss the Southern league funky. What a prize fool you are. The fact we won the Southern League 6 years out of eight between 1896 to 1903 with two FA Cup final appearances and one semi-final had half the ENGLAND team playing for us AND Fantastic crowds ( but then most of football did ) and the football association were in confusion on how to get all England's top players in the league they had formed, and with Southampton one of the top teams in England, Means nothing does it fratton ? So your success around War Time when many great fine top footballers were putting on uniforms around the country and leaving there families and clubs ( surprisingly you were a navel port ) Should really be dismissed should it ? Fact is, whether your Portsmouth, Southampton or any other Football Club fan, You will always believe your club is Special, with or without success.
Wow, an attendances/silverware debate. What a novel idea. My five-penneth is that Saints and Pompey share the bragging rights in different ways. Both sets of fans can point to stats which support their own natural bias, but at the end of the day, neither club is significant in a European context. However, if you look at which club is better positioned to make progress and become a big player, then I thinks it's obvious which that is, and I would rather look to the future than dwell on the past. CF
Not so fast fodderboy. You've probably got more going for you at the moment but fortunes can change very quickly in this game. We've both got a lot to look forward to now, having both come near to oblivion- remember.
He didn't say anything contrary to that. He just said one of us is better positioned to make progress - is he wrong?
A big club at the moment would be one with a hat load of Internationals, for some reason our best are seldom picked even if they are better than the select few.
Now it is easier to have a decent conversation, when you come back to reality FFD..........I don't know about you....but I would prefer both clubs to survive and to progress. The exception being when we play each other...just like you would prefer our own team to win which is natural. Beyond that would like to see both teams be promoted just to keep the rivalry healthy. Who ever wins on the day has the bragging rights as per usual........Oh I just hope it is us the next time we meet........you guys are going to be so sorry that you lost.......just as you have made our lives miserable over our last defeat to you. Now the point will be....will you be any different in defending your team than we have been......or are you going to just lay down and cry......Now I think I know the answer to that just as you do.........
