1. Watford promotion every time 2. By Stadium I presume you mean Wembley - I have not seen any match at the new stadium, nor likely to. In the old Stadium I saw many England games - the last being v. East Germany! (a 1-0 win in front of 25,000 - scorer B. Robson Bryan not Bobby). Another highlight was England losing to N Ireland 3. No - unless it was losing to France at Wembley 4. No, definitely not - but I was at Highbury the night the Arse won the old Inter City Fairs Cup - does that count?
: If you where given a choice between England winning the World Cup and Watford being promoted which would you choose ? Watford being promoted every time and then England winning the world cup. Second question, have any of you ever seen an England match live in the Stadium ? Yes many times and around the country as well. The third question, without looking it up can you remember the result of the last England match prior to the win in Bulgaria ? Draw with Montenegro 2-2 Last question, do you automatically support English teams in the champions league ? Only if there English Please see Gooners who are not an English club
I used to always support the home nations when they were playing but not anymore ... I was in Edinburgh on a stag do when we lost 2 - 1 to Brazil .. All the scot's had Brazil shirts with kilts! The abuse we received was far beyond friendly banter. I have since discussed it with some Scot's I know well and they say it is the English media that annoys them most thinking we will win everything. Apparently the English fans also believe they deserve to win all the major tournaments and we harp on about 66 and Jonny Wilkinsons drop goal all the time! It's not like they dont go on about the 5 - 1 win against us and the Wembley pitch invasion is it!!!!!!!! . The Irish and Welsh say the same thing about us being arrogant, and harping on about past glory's, seems to be just lealousy as they have nothing to shout about to be honest I dont know any English fan who doesn't want to win a major championship but I also don't no anyone who gives us too much hope either, that really make's a mockery of the whole arrogant tag!!...
1/ Seen lots of promotions with Watford and would like to see a world cup win in my lifetime, So poss the world cup win! (will prob change that if we are in the play off's tho) 2/ Yes, I saw a 0 - 0 draw with Columbia, rubbish game but Rene Higuita did his Scorpion kick! anyone else remeber that ? .... 3/ Yes 4/ Yes I always do, but may struggle with Man City this year .....
Your media do cause problems, the way that England teams are hyped up is plain stupid. It is very funny when England teams fall short especially after the hype. There is nothing the matter with going into a tournament full of confidence but to state that you will win and are the best! Mmmm let me think about that, you have to beat everyone to be the best and time and time again you fall short! As of jealousy, we know our limits I would be happy to qualify for a tournament, when ever that is going to be next I do not know. But the Scotland fans will go there for their two week holiday and take it as it is a two week holiday. We know our limitations anything extra is a bonus!
Some valid points there PSH but I do think that the media hype comment is a little harsh! the biggest critics of the English team over the past 10 to 15 years has been the press, some would even say the pressure they heap on the players does not help matters. Also I cannot ever remember anyone I know or seen a paper ever saying we think we are going to win a tournament! There also is nothing wrong with having high expectationas with your team especially when we have had players that are at the top of their game. Players like Terry, Ferdinand, Cole, Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney could have all got a place in any club team in europe, that would make you think that they are pretty good. I however never felt we ever had a chance (apart from euro 96) of winning any major tournaments and all the people I know have felt the same. So when you keep getting arrogant English thrown at you when your not it is a little unfair and I would say the majority of English I know feel the same... My feeling is the home nations should all stick together but there is no chance that will ever happen when so many fans of other countries have such a big chip on their shoulder ... (your an exception to that tho PSH, anyone who is a horn and a Scot is setting himself up for a whole heap of mysery, So I will wish Scotland well for your sake!!! your the only one tho )
I don't mind seeing the other home nations do well but not that fussed if they don't! I'd like to see England at least perform at a major tournament...goodness knows what other countries think of the hype our media put on the side!
It is very similar to the pressure NZ puts on the all Blacks , which is why imo they havent done as well in world cups as they should have done! The Auckland local paper has a chokemeter running with a noose on the right hand side for Graham Henry to put his head if they fail again!! Remember back to the Vitriol that GT suffered as England manager and you can see certain similarities! English Footy fans and NZ rugby fans have had too high an expectation that has been detrimental to both sides!
As I said earlier on this thread, walk a mile in our shoes - you may well change your mind over this being 'a little unfair'. I've no reason to disbelieve that you and your acquaintances are unfairly labelled as such, but my experience tells me that, whilst certainly not all, a sizeable number of English most certainly do come across as arrogant and condescending in their dealings with Scots and Australians - and I've no reason to believe that others are not on the receiving end too . For both, what you see as being a chip on their shoulder is simply nothing more than reaction to the veritable barrage of condescendence/arrogance that comes their way from England - none of which is actually merited I might add. Even in these threads it is evident. Take a few moments to look through for the disparaging comments made in reference to the standard of Scottish football in comparison to that of England. The comments are made even knowing that English clubs, especially EPL clubs, have a ludicrously high percentage of non-English players on their books, whereas at least it could be argued that Scottish football, with a couple of exceptions, is exactly that - Scottish. Having got that off my chest, I should add that (to use the old cliche) many of my best friends are English.........heck, my brother even married one
I'm Scottish and proud of it I was at Wembley for the England game at euro 96, down the end where Gary Mac missed the pen...difficult day And no one will ever convince me that letting the goal in vs the Dutch was anything other than a way of getting us out of the tournament but I'm no England-hater, I've never really understood it and I'll happily support the cricket team, and even the football team at times - Italia 90 being one The one time I got irritated by the media was when Celtic went on a bit of a European run a few years back and beat Liverpool and another English Prem team - but they did get the credit for that in my view Roll on Euro 2016 - with 24 teams we must be able to sneak in
A quiz. 1. Promotion 2. I saw the England - Brazil football game in Wembley and have seen other international matches in national stadiums. 3. No 4. No Do I win?
Utter BS BB and you know it...the vast majority of ordinary English people do not have one ounce or arrogance in their bodies. Your average ossie is 10 times more arrogant than an Englishment. All that "sports dominance" thrown at us for years, just how arrogant was that. It is a fact that the quality of jock football is much lower than the equivalent then football in England and that is at all levels, so take out all of the foreign stars in the Premshite and it is still a much lower quality - a good Championship club would spunk most SPL clubs. I am very happy to accept that the Sky money makes a difference, but that does not explain the difference in depth... Walk a mile in my shoes, I pay huge amounts of tax to keep Scotland paying for a levels of services not available in my country - the biggest irony of all time was having to send forms back to Student Finance England to an admin centre in Glasgow...see the full picture when living in a massively subsidised country
Like it or not England and Scotland need each other but neither will admit it! We need the Irish they invented guinness!! Dont know what the welsh bring to the party though!!
As for the arrogance of nations, i think that we are all guilty of it at one point or another. Some English people think that england are the dominant force in sport and in the world (namely the EDL) but they are wrong. There are some Welshmen who think they are God's gift to sport and women (namely Gavin Henson). There are scotts who think the same and there are irishmen too. We have all been there, but its the minority of people who think it. The Australians have been the worst and were for many years. This is the type of thing they do and Ponting was the worst for it! They think everything English is touched by the hand of God. And thats my point, everyone else hates them and disagrees with them.
Dan any sporting great side like that aussie team of the 80/90`s Everyone is going to be out to take a pop at them , Same as Man U these days in Footy and Fergie time( which does seem to be a real thing)!
England have had their dodgy moments as well! in the cricket ! The only recent true Gent in Cricket is MS Dhoni!
